Band competitions have a long history in the youth film genre and the narrative formula about “putting together a perfect musical group” never fails to enchant film and television audiences. Metal Lords is a new coming-of-age and musical film on Netflix that the American screenwriter wrote D.B. Weiss, one of the masterminds behind the eight seasons of the hit series Game of Thrones. What is this new story starring teenagers about?
“Two boys want to start a metal band, but they're the only ones in school interested in the genre. The search for a bass player is complicated, although there is a girl who plays the cello. Will they manage to find their rhythm in time for the battle of the bands? ”, notes the official synopsis of the film that was released on April 8.
Jaeden Martell, Adrian Greensmith and Isis Hainsworth give life to these three young men who begin an adventure in heavy metal at a young age in Metal Lords. Hunter (Greensmith) found in music a way out, after his mother abandoned him and left him living alone with his father from a very young age. At that time, he also forged a great friendship with Kevin (Martell), who is characterized by being very shy and quiet.
Both formed Skullfucker, a group (or duo?) who plays songs of the genre post death metal. He plays the electric guitar, while his friend serves as a drummer. Are the two of them really going to have what it takes to put on a great show? The answer is no, so they will go on the hunt for a third member with a brilliant talent for playing bass in view of the Battle of the Bands contest.
Although Kevin still deals with his double facet as drum manager of the school band and an attempt to rockstar with Hunter, he joins to participate. On the other hand, the new figure that appears in their lives is Emily (Hainsworth), a teenager of Scottish origin who plays notably in the cello. She ends up falling in love with Kevin and becomes the missing piece that Hunter is pursuing so much. The latter will have to fight his own prejudices about women in metal and there will be more than one discussion before accepting it.
In addition to the main stars, the cast consists of Brett Gelma, Sufe Bradshaw, Katie O'Grady, Teddy Van Ee, Noah Urrea, Michelle Fang, Katie McCabe, Mike D Harris, Parker Hall, Analesa Fisher, Lilian McNeil, Liam Krug, Joseph Bertot, Jovani Ridler, Rachel Pate, Kyle Stoltz, Ella de Vito, Jalon Howard, Maya Banitt and Dylan Horttor.
The script was written by D.B. Weiss, who created and produced Game of Thrones with David Benioff (also executive producer of this film). The television writing duo signed a millionaire contract with the streaming giant in 2019, after working for more than a decade with the HBO signal. Metal Lords is a production that belongs to the titles released under this collaboration and is currently available to watch in the Netflix catalog.
