Javier Aguirre won his first victory as coach of Mallorca in La Liga. He did so only against the reigning Spanish football champion, Atletico Madrid by Diego Pablo Simeone by the score of one goal by zero. With this, the Mexican coach managed to get the three points from the “nine finals” that were entrusted to him to save the team from relegation.
Vasco joined the vermilion squad with the mission of maintaining the category, a task that is not unknown in Iberian football since it is not the first club to take on the same conditions. As it has succeeded, it has also failed. His last adventure in the country was with Leganés and he couldn't help but finish in the second division.
Regarding his new team, Aguirre brought Mallorca out of the last three places in the standings in just two games. With the victory he reached 29 units and in combination with the defeat of Cádiz to Real Betis, he was able to climb to seventeenth place (the Andalusians fell to eighteenth by staying at 28 points).
After being introduced as the new coach, Vasco assured that he did not need more time to accept the proposal and said that each remaining match will be played as a contest for the championship. “It didn't take me five minutes to accept the proposal and although being in decline conditions, that makes you get an extra. We have a nine-match league and there is the ability to overcome,” he said on arrival.
In his debut he could do little against Getafe that is on the rise after a terrible start to the season. Against the blues, he received his first defeat when he lost by a score of one goal by zero on the court of the Alfonso Pérez Coliseum. The goal of that match was scored by Borja Mayoral just under ten minutes after regular time.
This time, before some colchoneros who are fighting to stay among the top places in La Liga all odds broke. In what was his presentation at the stadium to his fans, those led by the Mexican gave the bell by winning one by zero. By collecting a maximum penalty, striker Vedat Muriqi scored the winning goal. With more than 20 minutes left on the clock, Mallorca withstood the onslaught of the people of Madrid and won the victory.

Real Mallorca will represent the sixth team he directs in Spain. He did so before at Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol in Barcelona and Leganés. With the exception of the colchoneros, these have been situations in which the team struggles to get out of the last places in the standings. The most recent example was Leganés who could not save from descending in 2020.
