Vice-Presidential Candidate Francia Márquez described the statements of Senator Juan Diego Gómez, President of the Senate, as “cowardly, irresponsible and injurious”. linked it to the dissidents of the FARC and the National Liberation Army (ELN).

In a statement, the formula of presidential candidate Gustavo Petro distorted the controversial statements by Gómez in the midst of a political control debate against Alexander Vega, the national registrar.

The statements of the Conservative Party congressman caused so much discomfort in public opinion that Francia Márquez herself announced that she and her team are working on the “appropriate” legal actions against Juan Diego Gomez.

Marquez said that the president of the Senate “uses his inauguration to attack me and put my life and that of my family, and the communities I represent as a candidate for the Vice Presidency of Colombia,” she says, at the same time that she makes serious allegations against Gómez.

Before ending his vehement pronouncement, Márquez made it clear to his followers that he has no relation to the guerrillas mentioned. “Colombia, I have not and have not had links with illegal armed groups. My cause has been to take care of life, peace and respect for the human rights of all, everyone,” added the candidate for the Vice-Presidency.

He added that he rejects “any support or mention of the Eln for our campaign” and ratified that his candidacy belongs to a “people who cry for peace” and that is why he will never allow “them to use war and fear to impose their ideas or purposes. I will continue to represent millions of women, youth and communities who see in my voice the way to live tasty,” she concluded.

The President of the Senate spoke after a response from Senator Wilson Arias, in which he criticized the Conservative Party and specifically Senator Laureano Acuña, who is being investigated for alleged electoral corruption.

I had not wanted to refer to your party that accompanies the ELN, active in terrorism, to its vice-president and celebrates the appointment of this woman. And that the former FARC and some dissidents have spoken out in favor of his presidential campaign. And I feel very sorry, but if we are going to see the straw in someone else's eye here, I have to tell you that in the Conservative Party nobody sponsors the Frontline,” said Juan Diego Gómez.

In addition, the president of the senators assured that he has in his possession a video from a media outlet of the ELN guerrilla in which he assures that this armed group supports the vice-presidential candidacy of Francia Márquez. I want to tell you that I have in my possession a video from March 28, in which an ELN news outlet supports your candidacy,” Gomez said without showing any evidence.

For his part, the president of the Democratic Pole, Senator Alexander López, rejected what Gómez said and asked that guarantees be provided for Francia Márquez so that he can advance his vice-presidential campaign “with peace and quiet”. Moreover, he said that from the same entities of the State “his life is being put at risk, which cannot be tolerated in any way,” he added, while saying that he will denounce the conservative congressman.

“Based on this affront to democracy committed by the President of Congress in the midst of the electoral campaign, we will bring the legal actions necessary to protect the life, honor and good name of Francia Márquez in the face of reckless allegations that put her and her family's lives at risk,” said López.
