Electricity Industry Law: what will be the benefits for Mexicans

After the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) endorsed the Electricity Industry Law, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador reiterated that this is an advance for the benefit of the economy of Mexicans.

“We saved the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and guaranteed that the price of electricity does not increase,” the president said during his traditional morning conference last Friday, April 8.

In that regard, we will detail here what benefits Mexicans could achieve with this approval, according to AMLO.

What are they?

*With the approval, abuses of increases in electricity rates will be sought to cede.

*Hydroelectric power plants can now be considered as clean energy generators. “The Federal Electricity Commission has 60 hydroelectric plants that were built over time with public investment and the 60 hydroelectric plants were shut down.”

*According to AMLO, hydroelectric plants will already be able to generate with all their turbines. In this regard, the president clarified that hydroelectric plants generated at least 3% of energy, because they did not allow them to be dispatched to the grid and they gave preference to foreign companies and that is why Tabasco was flooded, “because since they were not turbining, the vessels were full and it was affected even more in the rainy and hurricane season.

*The project will not cause harm to the nation, because according to AMLO, it is an infrastructure of the nation, since new dams will no longer be built.

*What will be sought is to produce clean and cheap energy.

Meanwhile, the President gave an example around the subject and with respect to another country. “The Algerian government just told the government of Spain yesterday that the price of gas is going to increase and the price of electricity will increase, even more, because there they opted for privatization. And we, even if the Conservatives are angry, we have to put the public interest, the interest of the nation, first.”

According to official information, the Electricity Industry Act aims to promote the sustainable development of the electrical industry and ensure its continuous, efficient and safe operation for the benefit of the population.

It also includes some other activities such as: generation, transmission, distribution and commercialization of electricity.

The energy sources that will be considered clean are: wind, solar radiation in all its forms; ocean energy in its various forms (tidal, tidal, wave, sea currents and salt concentration gradient); heat from geothermal deposits; bioenergy, among others.

On April 7, the SCJN gave the green light to the Electricity Industry Act with the intention of modifying the order of energy dispatch of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). Faced with this, the Mexican president reiterated that it was a historical and patriotic decision.

“The damage was repaired, people were protected so that in the future there would be no abuse or increase in electricity rates.”
