The whole cycling world is on the lookout for the health of the 26-year-old Dutchman Milan Vader, who is now “stable” but with a reserved forecast after suffering a serious fall during a relegation in the fifth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, his team Jumbo-Visma declared this Friday. His country's press had reported shortly before that Vader was in “critical condition”.
“Following the information about Milan Vader after his fall today (Friday) in the Itzulia Basque Country, we report that his situation is stable,” the team said through his Twitter profile, adding that the runner was in the hospital in Bilbao.
According to the Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad (AD), the runner was notably affected after falling through a ravine in the stage between Zamudio and Mallabia.
The newspaper noted that he had broken vertebrae, as well as fractures in his clavicle and shoulder blade. He also had to have emergency surgery on his carotid artery to insert a stent, to increase blood flow to the brain. “Milan receives very good medical care at the university medical hospital in Bilbao”, they added in the Dutch press.
The accident occurred about 100 kilometers before the finish of the fifth stage. Vader, who was in the platoon, lost control of his bike during one of the descents, crashed into the metal guardrail, flew over it and fell a few meters down a hill. At first he feared for his life, but he was quickly transferred to a medical center, where he was inducted into a coma and operated on successfully.
The 26-year-old Dutch cyclist, teammate of Olympic champion Primoz Roglic, is making his first season in the professional squad in the top category of cycling. He comes from the world of mountain biking and was tenth in the Olympic cross-country event last year at the Tokyo Olympics. The world of cycling awaits its evolution while news about its health is awaited from the Cruces Hospital in the basque city.
