'Cali, a dream with puppets': the International Film Festival returns

Puppet professionals from Italy, Bosnia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia will participate in this new edition of the festival

Between April 22 and May 1, 2022, the twenty-first edition of the International Puppet Festival 'Cali a dream with puppets' will be held, which since 1998, together with the International Puppet Fair, has brought together different groups of puppeteers from all over the world.

In this new edition of the festival, puppet professionals from Italy, Bosnia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia will participate.

Since its inception, the International Puppet Festival has established itself as a meeting place and exchange of aesthetic proposals, knowledge, techniques, dramaturgies and styles around puppets.

The organizers of the event emphasize that “it is a dialogue promoting universal knowledge and recognition of puppet theatre where the most beneficiary is the Cali audience, to which a window to the world is opened”.

In addition, they warn that the festival is a very important space for the people of Caleños to be part of these cultural processes in the capital of the Valley, especially the puppeteer guild, which has developed outstanding work in recent years.

The transformation that puppet theatre has undergone in the last three decades places us before a multidisciplinary theater, which is expressed with string puppets, glove puppets, shadows, anthropomorphic objects or abstract and symbolic forms, among others and infinite variations, without neglecting the growing use of others. artistic disciplines such as animation, film or new technologies” pondered the puppeteer guild.

According to the Cali House of Puppets, this company is characterized by the transformation of the different parts of the puppet body into characters. In this way, hands, nose, knees, etc. are expressed in a theatrical language, without words, but full of emotion, symbols and visual metaphors. His creation, Small Tales, mix puppets and mime. Hugo and Inés have participated in numerous important festivals in Europe, America and Asia; the one in Segovia, in Spain, being common.

The Romance do vaqueiro Benedito of the Mamulengo Presepada group (Brazil)

Some characters from Romance are classics of popular culture, others, more contemporary, burst into the action of this show full of improvisations and in direct communication with the public. This staging tells the story of Benedito, Margarida and Boi Estrela, who flee from Captain João Redondo's estate, she is pregnant and the captain, Margarida's father, is chasing them with a giant cobra. The baby is born and in the middle of parties and struggles he is baptized and, incidentally, the public is also baptized. The Mamulengo group stands out for dramatic staging, represented by puppeteers-actors, and which brings together in a small box dance, pantomimes and acrobatics.

Traditional puppet show performed by Italian puppeteer Irene Vecchia. Pulcinella is one of the most famous characters and masks in the world, and he has brothers and cousins all over the world especially in Europe, these are: Mr. Punch and Judy tradition in England, Polichinelle in France, Petruska in Russia, Don Cristobal in Spain, Jan Klassen in Holland, Kaspar in Germany, Vitez Laszlo in Hungary and Dom Roberto in Portugal. Guarattelle shows are the traditional Neapolitan glove puppet shows.

Life, love and laughter of the Cía group. Carlos Alvarez Mimo Clown (Colombia)

It is a comic pantomime work, composed of tender, human and crazy paintings, in which the actor Carlos Álvarez effectively combines the sublimity of music with the grace of puppets, the sound effects, the nonsense of the clown and the optical illusions of mime. And all, because life is the greatest value we have in this world and the best way to maintain it is with love and laughter.

This work is inspired by the story “The Flying Cangrejito” by the Cuban writer Onelio Jorge Cardozo. In this work, written by the Colombian puppeteer Javier Montoya, a community of animals, small inhabitants of the forest, is the victim of the trickster Sapote Sapote who has simply taken over everything; the confinement of the little bee Alegría in the tower of his magical castle is the spark that ignites the flame of solidarity and makes the hearts of animal friends beat with more force and hope, assuming the definitive decision to free themselves from the selfishness and tyranny to which they are subjected by the terrible toad Timothy they manage to overcome. Thus they understand even more that collaboration and mutual aid are necessary to achieve everyone's purposes by strengthening their friendship.
