Prior to the revocation of mandate consultation and after the controversy over recovering the Moctezuma plume, mainly promoted by the government of President López Obrador, Marcelo Ebrard presumed the arrival of a new Mexican exhibition at the International Museum of South Korea on April 9.

This is the exhibition “The Aztecs”, which was present at the Ethnographic Museum in Vienna, where there is also the famous Moctezuma Plume that is unable to move to avoid any damage.

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs congratulated the Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) for the collaboration, since from now until August 2022, residents and visitors to the city of Seoul will be able to see in detail a little more about the Aztec Empire that was forged in Mexico.

“The Aztecs, an exhibition that traveled from Vienna to the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, is already receiving thousands of visitors. Congratulations to the Secretariat of Culture and the National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH. Excellent!!!!” , wrote Ebrard through his Twitter account.

According to the official website of the Seoul Museum, the exhibition will be available from May 3 to August 28 in the special exhibition hall on the first floor, where 208 ancestral pieces of Aztec culture will be featured.

In the promotional text of the exhibition, the International Museum of South Korea highlighted the arrival of the image of Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec god of the underworld or “the lord of the mansion of the dead”, for which they thanked the transfer and support of the Government of Mexico, in the context of the 60-year relationship between the two nations.

“This exhibition attempts to tell the fascinating stories of their strong will to thank their gods and sustain the world, a belief that had been obscured by the practices of human sacrifice,” the Seoul Museum mentioned in the presentation of “The Aztecs”.

According to the perception taken by the organizers, “The exhibition explores the great artistic, intellectual, economic and political development of the Aztecs who flourished in Mesoamerica, presenting precious collections from 11 museums in Mexico and Europe, as well as newly discovered finds that were never shown to the public.”

Controversy with the Moctezuma Plume

Marcelo Ebrard's publication stood out among some users, as the exhibition comes from the Museum of Ethnology in Vienna, where the Moctezuma Plume is exhibited, one of the pre-Hispanic pieces that the AMLO Government has insisted on recovering.

Even the president himself would have asked Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller to insist to Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, on the loan of the piece “although it is an almost impossible mission, given that they have completely appropriated it,” the Mexican president said at the time.

Due to the refusal of the Austrian organization, based mainly on the serious damage that could be caused by a transfer, the attacks from different Mexican figures did not stop against the Vienna Museum.

Now, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the INAH and the Vienna Museum itself, the famous exhibition of Mexica Civilization has been moved to the Asian continent, where it will remain for the next three months as part of a special exhibition in South Korea.
