What would be in the pocket of Mexicans if there were no tianguis? They are those spaces that offer all kinds of items and food at very tempting prices. It should be noted that it is also a way to support local trade and contribute to the economy of the area.
Interestingly, the roots of these establishments lie in pre-Hispanic Mexico and the old Tlatelolco Market is an example of street businesses, since the site offered all kinds of objects, from animals to fur and medicinal herbs.
Since then, companies have continued to adopt this sales strategy and over time the Government encouraged the creation of some spaces for these purposes, as they were excellent alternatives for people with limited resources.
Later, the tianguis ceased to be a place for people of less privileged classes and became a center for all those seeking variety, quality and price. North of Mexico City is the largest market in Mexico City and Latin America: the Tianguis de San Felipe de Jesús.
Gustavo A. Madero is the mayor's office that houses this place that is put on every Sunday from very early. Its length is just over 7 kilometers and it receives about 500 thousand people every week.
The author José Luis Ramírez states that the origins of this tianguis date back to 1962, at that time it was baptized as “Emancipatory Union”. The reason why it changed its name some time later was because the neighbors preferred that, in honor of the colony, the name should be changed to “San Felipe de Jesús” to later be known as “the tianguis de la Sanfe”.
Although it was not that big at first, over time it spread and all kinds of vendors were added, nowadays you can find clothes, shoes, prepared food and drinks, toys, fruits and vegetables, household tools and even spare parts. The variety of the site is such that on Sundays it receives visits from people who come from different parts of the Mexican Republic.
An article by the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) points out that this place, which receives half a million attendees, works around 30,000 merchants who offer all kinds of products and services.
Like any street business, it has been accorded the reputation of being a place where stolen goods are sold, mainly electronic objects, however, unfortunately it is a risk that is run whenever you buy in these types of establishments.
In this regard, Luis Ramírez mentions that it is a condition in which the neglect of governments to regulate and ensure better conditions for people intervenes, and although it is not justification, “reality is always reflected in a search for greater levels of flexibility, not only of employment, but also of the price of the force of work, working time and functions in the workplace”.
The place adjoins the eastern part of the State of Mexico, specifically the boundaries of the municipalities of Nezahualcoyotl and Ecatepec. Despite all the benefits of these spaces, it is important to mention that the mobility of people who live nearby is also adversely affected, in addition, more than 120 tons of garbage are generated every weekend, which 12 trucks collect at the end of the day.
