Ken Salazar visited the Treasury Secretary after SCJN ruling; he recalled that “the economies of the US and Mexico are integrated”

The United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, went to the National Palace to hold a nearly two-hour meeting with Treasury Secretary Rogelio Ramírez de la O. This meeting occurred after the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) validated last year's electricity reform and led to a wave of protection for part of private companies that indicated that investments in Mexico in the energy sector are at risk.

On the way out of the meeting, Salazar merely said that “the union between Mexico and the United States is forever because economies are integrated,” adding that things are on the right track.

This is Ken Salazar's second visit in a week to the headquarters of the federal government, and although President Andrés Manuel López Obrador denied that the talk they held on April 6 was about the electricity industry, the US diplomat spoke after the Court's decision and said that although the government of the states Unidos respects Mexico's sovereignty and democratic processes, and is also concerned that “the Electricity Industry Act of 2021 will likely open the door to litigation.

During his morning conference this Friday, López Obrador acknowledged that Ambassador Ken Salazar is concerned about the changes in the energy market being promoted by his government, however, he assured that international treaties are not violated.

Regarding the ambassador's statements about possible international litigation that could arise due to the reform of the Electricity Industry Law that displaces private companies to give preference to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the Mexican Executive stated: “He talks about legal actions, because we would also do the same because we are an independent, free country.”
