'Alma', the official mascot of the 2022 Copa América Femenina football in Colombia is already involved in a controversy

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) called the character a “brave dog”, which outraged netizens on social media

In the draw for the group stage of the 2022 Copa América Femenina that hosts Colombia, the official mascot 'Alma' was presented, a character who was presented as a “brave dog” and “sister of the 'Pibe' Valderrama”. Apparently, the fact that the chosen animal was a dog has aroused indignation on social networks.

In the images he appears in a red shirt, yellow shorts and playing with a ball while his eye itches.

According to the presentation of the draw, 'Alma' declares herself a fan of football, both on and off the pitch and is also very competitive. “Her friendly personality allows her to make friends everywhere and makes everyone want to play with her. Thus, she is spreading her passion for football and making the CONMEBOL Copa América Femenina reach more and more fans,” declared the official organizer of the tournament.

The choice of mascot generated numerous controversies because the word 'dog' is associated by many people as an insult to women or something demeaning, while other, less conservative aspects saw it as a female revolution since the election of this character.

Sports journalist Antonio Casale commented, “I try to think they did it in good faith.”

The player Gavy Santos who passed through Santa Fe, Huila, women's Fortress and now at River Plate, left her opinion through emoticons that indicate that she did not like the new mascot.

And more netizens let them see what they thought of the new mascot for the Copa América Femenina.
