Traffic violations will only be lifted by authorized agents: how to identify them

As of April 4, only a certain number of police officers will be able to fine motorists in the event of committing an infringement, as established by the new Mexico City traffic regulations.

According to the Department of Citizen Security of the CDMX, violations will be imposed by authorized agents, who will work with portable electronic equipment and through a technological system to sign transit tickets.

Even, Omar Garcia Harfuch, Secretary of Citizen Security, explained that there will be 400 traffic elements, who will be able to lift penalties and with the intention of creating transparency.

The uniformed will have to work throughout the area of Mexico City, that is, in the 16 mayors and will implement specific operations.

What are the characteristics of policemen?

*Agents can be identified by means of a QR code that they will wear on their uniforms.

*Only those who are part of the Special Corps of Trained Police may be fined.

*They must be identified, have distinctive uniforms and vehicles.

*On their uniform they will wear this badge with the phrase: “CDMX transit authorized to infringe”.

Whereas, according to the Secretary of Citizen Security, financial support will be provided to persons who have been violated.

* 90% discount if the fine is settled within the first 10 days after the date.

* 50% discount from the 11th to the 30th day.

According to Garcia Harfuch, changes were made to the traffic regulations in order to foster trust in citizens, close spaces to acts of corruption and ensure safe mobility.

For her part, the head of government of CDMX, Claudia Sheinbaum, gave her opinion on the matter and reported: “We are renovating the traffic police in Mexico City: more mobility, reducing accidents and eradicating corruption.”

The regulations of the Ministry of Citizen Security detailed that: “The sanctions imposed on violators by agents authorized to infringe with the support of portable electronic equipment will always be monetary in nature, while violations captured through the City's technological systems will consist of admonitions, online courses, face-to-face awareness workshop and community work, as appropriate to the penalty for points to enrolment.”

It was also announced that each enrolment has at least ten initial points, which will be reflected in the systems of the Ministry of Mobility, the Ministry of Citizen Security and the Ministry of the Environment, which will be subtracted according to registered violations.
