The Sonora State Prosecutor's Office announced that they handed down a sentence against the third person implicated in the 2020 murder of digital journalist José Guadalupe Castillo.
According to the statement issued by the Prosecutor's Office, the Judge handed a 35-year prison sentence against Saul Eduardo “N” after the evidence gathered against him was shown during the trial.
Two other persons involved also received convictions. They are Rodolfo “N” and Desiderio Alejandro “N” who received the penalty of 31 years 3 months in prison for the two responsible, in addition to the payment of a fine of 72 thousand 4.32 pesos for reparation of moral damage, of which 22 thousand 936.32 pesos is a fine and 49 thousand 68 pesos are for reparation of moral damage.
All three were sentenced for the crime of homicide qualified with harassment and advantage, in addition to robbery with violence in people in home room.
With this new ruling, the Prosecutor's Office stated in its statement, that the case of the murder of José Guadalupe Castillo, founder of the medium Priority Maximum, “which amazed the community of Cajeme and the South of the State”, is now over.
The journalist was killed on the morning of June 11, 2020. In this crime, the culprits surprised the communicator inside his house after knocking on the door of his home, located on Calle San Martín, in El Campanario.
When he came to the door, first Rodolfo “N” struck him in the face and was subsequently attacked with a knife repeatedly. Meanwhile, Desiderio Alejandro remained abroad to watch.
José Guadalupe was able to go outside, but due to a back injury, he died in front of the house when he suffered massive hemorrhage due to perforation in the lung caused by the attackers.
As a result of the investigations carried out by the Sonora Prosecutor's Office Trilogy, the identity of the attackers was determined and simultaneous search actions were carried out in homes located in the Casa Real, Campanario and Villa Bonita colonies.
After these raids carried out by the authorities, they secured objects that were seized by those responsible before fleeing. After the investigations and various actions by the staff of the Sonora Prosecutor's Office, objects such as a microwave oven, computer, cell phone, USB stick, wallet with IDs and boxes with documentation were recovered.
Demesio and Rodolfo were arrested on July 20, 2020, who were linked to trial and placed in pretrial detention.
Castillo Alemán, 55, was an auxiliary policeman and for about 25 years he worked as a reporter in several local media outlets and covered the police source for the newspaper he founded. The journalist's murder was condemned by the then Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Alfonso Durazo (current governor of Sonora), who mourned the journalist's death through his Twitter page and sent his sincere condolences to the victim's family and friends.
The incident was also condemned by the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH). Let us remember that Mexico concentrates most of the murders of journalists in Latin America, in addition to being the most dangerous country to practice this profession.
