They approved marriage equality in Jalisco with 26 votes in favor and 8 against

The state legislature also voted for a ban on so-called conversion therapies

The Legislative Power of Jalisco, in the 39th extraordinary session of April 6, 2022, approved with 26 votes in favor, 8 against and 3 abstentions the majority necessary for this, equal marriage within the state.

The parliamentary amendment to Decree 3.7 of the Order established that Article 258 should read as follows: Marriage is an institution of a public nature and social interest, through which two people decide freely to realize the community of life, to seek their personal fulfillment and the foundation of a family with respect, mutual assistance and equal rights and obligations.

The opinion states that both persons need to be at least 18 years of age in order to enter into marriage in accordance with article 45 of the General Law on Children and Adolescents.

In addition, it includes in Article 267 Bis that both persons shall prove to the Civil Registry Officer, that they have received the premarital course which shall not be less than two hours, the content of which will be on the rights and obligations that are contracted with the bond of marriage.

This, he adds, should contain a section on gender equality and equity, as well as on the prevention, detection, care, punishment and eradication of family and gender-based violence.

In addition, the legislature of Jalisco prohibited conversion therapies and thus the imposition of a fine on those who force them to take them, with a total of 36 votes in favor, 1 against and zero abstentions.

The deputies voted to ensure that in Mexico “proper investigation of conversion therapies, as well as threats and corrective violations, or “correction” efforts against lesbian, bisexual and transgender women; impose appropriate penalties on those responsible and implement reparation measures for victims of such crimes”.

Prior to the vote, Deputy Mara Nadiezhda Robles Villaseñor of the Hagamos Jalisco party, spoke minutes before giving a speech to her colleagues:

“I think marriage is said to open the door to the erosion of the family, traditions and strange ideas that have been labeled as gender ideology.”

Congressman Edgar Enrique Velázquez González also agreed to the tribune of the same party, who said that “what happens at this moment is that conservative groups have run out of flags. We liberals are sure that we will win.”
