The French government summoned Russia's ambassador to Paris on Thursday after its embassy posted a photo on Twitter claiming to show a “film set” of Ukrainians staging murders of civilians in Bucha that has stoked global outrage.

“Given the indecency and provocation of the communication from the Russian embassy in France about Bucha's atrocities, I decided to summon the Russian ambassador this morning,” Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian tweeted.

The tweet, which was later deleted, appeared to show bodies placed on a street and was subtitled “Filming scene, city of Bucha”, along the lines of Moscow's statements accusing Kiev of making a “montage” with the corpses found in the city.

France's European Minister Clement Beaune had already tweeted Wednesday night that the embassy's claim was “beyond shame: stop”.

Dozens of civilian bodies, some with their hands tied behind their backs, were discovered in Bucha and other cities near Kiev last weekend after Russian forces abandoned their offensive against the capital.

According to the Attorney General of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova, the bodies of 410 civilians were found. Moscow denied murdering civilians in Bucha, and both the Kremlin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov say they are a press setup.

The harrowing images Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky called “war crimes” generated widespread condemnation from Ukraine's allies, even though the Kremlin claims that the deaths were false or carried out by Ukrainian troops.

US President Joe Biden said Wednesday that the Chief War Crimes Prosecutor of the Department of Justice would meet with his French counterpart to assist in a possible war crimes trial “to identify and hold accountable those responsible for atrocities in Ukraine.”

France had already summoned the Russian envoy, Alexey Meshkov, on March 25 to protest the “unacceptable” tweets broadcast by the embassy that showed crude cartoons depicting Europe and the United States.

In a tweet, labeled “European Solidarity in Action”, you can see a line of people kneeling identified as EU member states licking the bare buttocks of a sinister-looking character of Uncle Sam.

In another, two doctors in white coats and hats with US and EU badges can be seen injecting a zombified figure from “Europe” with syringes marked “Russophobia”, “Neo-Nazism”, “Sanctions”, as well as “Culture of Cancellation” and “COVID-19”.

On Monday, France announced the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats as part of a broader European initiative.
