Mexican senator and politician, Emilio Álvarez Icaza, called Mexico's abstention stance on Russia's suspension from the Commission on Human Rights a sanction for atrocities committed in Bucha, Ukraine, as “regrettable”.
On Thursday, April 7, of the 193 members that make up the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), 93 voted in favor of punishing Russia, while 24 voted against and 58 abstained, as in the case of Mexico.
While President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had previously advanced Mexico's stance and vote, Álvarez Icaza argued that a much stronger message should have been sent in the face of human rights violations that Russian troops have committed on Ukrainian territory, he told Infobae Mexico.
