Russia expressed its rejection in the UN General Assembly on Thursday of the motion for a resolution proposing its expulsion from the Human Rights Council.

“This is not the place or time for a play, nor for performances like the one in Ukraine. The draft resolution that we are going to consider today has no link to the human rights situation on the ground,” said the Kremlin ambassador at the headquarters in New York.

At the beginning of the session, the Ukrainian ambassador, Sergiy Kyslytsya, acknowledged that an expulsion would be “extraordinary”, but stressed that Russia's actions are “beyond the limits”. For this reason, he added: “Russia's suspension from the Human Rights Council is not an option, it is a duty.”

But the Russian ambassador, in turn, replied that the measure “is an attempt by the US to maintain domination and control, and to continue its human rights colonialism in international relations,” and denounced that with these impulses “a rift is being created in this human rights architecture that took years to build.”

He argued that an expulsion would set a worrying precedent and said that similar antecedents did not lead to conflict resolution, but rather to their complexization.

“The use of sanctions by the West and military interventions has been the action, while Russia has always upheld the principle of cooperation, based on mutual respect and equal participation. Our priority has always been constructive dialogue with all parties,” he said.

In the midst of new and constant denunciations of human rights abuses and possible war crimes, the Moscow envoy reiterated the rhetoric accusing Ukraine of setting up the scenes, despite the fact that the international press has verified the facts in several instances.

We reject erroneous allegations based on events that have been staged and which are bullies,” he insisted.

“We would like everyone to take this draft decision into account and vote against it, because it is an attempt to destroy the human rights architecture as we know it,” he concluded in his presentation.

Earlier, the G7 countries called for Russia's suspension from the Human Rights Council due to the “atrocities” recorded in the invasion of Ukraine. In the statement, the G7 Foreign Ministers, who also promised that the perpetrators of the massacre of the Ukrainian city of Bucha “will be held accountable”.
