Last Tuesday, the renowned American financial magazine Forbes released its annual list of billionaires in the world. In this list, several Mexicans were included who have managed to stand out for the great fortunes they accumulate.
As is customary, in the first position is the Mexican of Lebanese origin Carlos Slim Helú, who for several years has remained the richest person in Mexico, and one of the wealthiest in the world, being even, from 2010 to 2013, the person with the most money in the world.
This year, Slim managed to increase his fortune considerably, according to Forbes, because last year, his fortune was estimated at $62.8 billion, while this year, he was estimated to reach $81.2 billion, which allowed him to climb three places on the list, because while last year he was on the 16th position, this year is in the 13th, surpassing even tycoons such as the American Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Facebook, who ranked 15th, with a fortune of USD 67.3 billion.
In second place, in Mexico, there was no change either, since Germán Larrea Mota Velasco, the owner of the Grupo México conglomerate, remained, and who managed to increase his fortune from USD 27,110 million to USD 30,800 million. This means that Larrea increased his fortune by USD 3 billion 690 million.
Thirdly, there was no change either, since the businessman who owned Grupo Salinas, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, remained, who has a fortune of USD 12.4 billion. However, in the top 10 of the wealthiest people in the country, there were some changes, since three people who had not been seen in the list, entered it.
Such is the case of Alejandro Bailléres Gual and his five brothers, who inherited the mining fortune built by his father Alberto Bailleres González, a businessman who died just last February, at the age of 90. Alberto Bailleres owned Palacio de Hierro and the mining company Peñoles, as well as the insurance company GNP, among other companies, and until last year, he was considered the fourth wealthiest person in the country, with a fortune amounting to USD 10.480 billion. Forbes this year estimated the brothers' fortune at USD 6.7 billion. They appear in position four among the wealthiest people in Mexico.
In April 2021, Bailleres González ceded the presidency of Grupo Bal to his 61-year-old son Alejandro, who is also vice president of the mining company Industrias Peñoles, known for its silver mines. His younger brother, Juan Pablo Bailleres, is in charge of the livestock and bullfighting division of Grupo Bal. Another of her sisters, Teresa, and the only woman among them, holds an executive position in the luxury department stores of Grupo Palacio de Hierro. The other brothers are Raúl, Alberto and Xavier, and Mauricio Bailleres. The latter died in 2014.
Juan Domingo Beckmann Legorreta was another of the entrepreneurs who first appeared on the Forbes list this 2022. He inherited from his father, Juan Francisco Beckmann Vidal a nearly 51% stake in the tequila firm Bacle SAB, maker of José Cuervo. Juan Domingo is CEO of Becle, a company that became listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange in 2017. Forbes estimated that it has a fortune of $4.3 billion. He appears in position six, among the wealthiest people in the country.
Another businesswoman who first appeared in the top 10 of the wealthiest people in Mexico was Juan Domingo's sister, Karen Virginia Beckmann Legorreta, who also inherited from her father an almost 36% stake in Becle SAB. She is a member of the board of Becle, where her brother is executive director. The company has been in the family for 250 years. Forbes estimated Karen Virginia's fortune to be $3 billion. It appears in position nine, on the list of the wealthiest people in Mexico.
