The first Colombian goal in the group stage of the 2022 South American Conmebol Cup was won by Vallecaucano left winger Stiven Mendoza on the night of this Tuesday, April 5.
The score served as a boost and comeback for Ceará in the Brazilians' 2-1 victory over Independiente de Avellaneda at the Castelão de Fortaleza Stadium.
It should be clarified that Mendoza started the match reprimanded seven minutes later for protesting an arbitration decision by Uruguayan central judge Leodán González. The Brazilians had a hard time getting into the match despite the fact that Independiente got one player less in the 12th minute due to the expulsion of Ayrton Costa and Gaston Togni's goal in the 32nd minute in a play in which Antioquia's defender Andrés Felipe Roa actively participated, recovering for the King of Cups:
In the 61st minute it was time to shine for Mendoza, who wearing number 10 executed from twelve steps a powerful left-handed corner to the Independiente goal after a hand inside the area of captain Lucas Romero. Goalkeeper Sebastián Sosa could do little to stop the Colombian's shot that meant 1-1 of the match with more than half an hour to go before the final whistle:
Two minutes after Stiven's goal, Ceará suffered the loss of one of his players by double yellow card. Nino Paraíba said goodbye to his teammates and the match was left with 10 players for each team.
Within a few minutes, Independiente lost focus and the Brazilian team turned the game around. Ceará's 2-1 came after a header by Zé Roberto in a false start by goalkeeper Eduardo Sosa. No one could stop the shot despite a slight detour at an Independiente central and the score went on to be in favor of the locals:
Ceará coach Dorival Junior decided to take Stiven Mendoza out of the game in the 79th minute to enter midfielder Iury Castilho. In this way, the Brazilian team did not rush and maintained control of the result at home in the remaining 10 minutes.
It should be recalled that the last goal scored by Mendoza in Ceará had been a month ago in the 0-3 victory of his team for round 1 of the 2022 Brazil Cup against São Raimundo. She has currently won the starter and hopes to contribute to her club this weekend in the start of Brasileirão, the continuation of the Brazilian Cup and the South American group stage in which she will face Club General Caballero JLM of Paraguay and Deportivo La Guaira of Venezuela.
This is how Ceará and Independiente arrived at the crossing for the 2022 South American Cup:
Ceará played his last game on Thursday, March 24. After drawing 0-0 in regulation time, he lost 3-4 on penalties against Clube de Regatas Brasil (CRB) in the quarter-finals for the Copa do Nordeste.
For its part, Independiente beat Barracas Central 1-0 on Friday, April 1, with Tomás Pozzo's goal, for the 8th date of the Argentine Professional League Cup. He ranks seventh in Zone 2 with 10 points.
