A 74-year-old man died in Uruguay after falling from the fourth floor of a building in the city of Colonia, in the west of the country. A woman, his wife of 61 years, confessed to being the murderer of his partner after hitting him with a pot, which is a type of hammer, and throwing him into the void.

A phone call on Monday afternoon, to 911, alerted the police to the person's fall in the courtyard of the ground floor apartment. A neighbor of the building claimed to have seen a person lying in the courtyard, with no vital signs.

The police mobile, when it arrived at the scene, was able to establish what happened and the troops went to the fourth floor, where they were notified that their partner was present, reported the newspaper El País.

In the first instance, the woman denied having participated in the fall of the man, but when the Scientific Police began to document the scene, the study did not coincide with a suicide.

Among the indications that the researchers found, there were drops of blood towards the window, the pot with which the man was hit, and marks on the support rail of the balcony exposed the situation.

After being questioned, after the evidence, the women acknowledged throwing the man off the balcony, after they argued in the apartment and hitting him with the hammer. She accepted the crime, under the excuse that she was tired of being a victim of domestic violence. The couple, however, did not file any previous complaints of assault.

The first version of the woman was that they were sleeping and that her husband got up to go to the bathroom, but he never came back. “However, the troops noticed that there was a drip of blood on the way to the balcony and after the technical police the retiree's statement that the man had fallen was not closing,” said Jhonny Diego, the chief of police of Cologne.

“She said she was tired of the domestic violence he was doing,” Diego said, and that the crime “shocked colonial society because they are things that are not expected.” Locally, both people were known in the area and, even a few days earlier, they had been seen together at a welfare event.

The prosecutor in the case ordered that a psychiatric examination be carried out on the woman to determine whether she has the capacity to perceive evil. A formal hearing is planned with the evidence collected, where, depending on the diagnosis, it will be decided whether his sentence is prison or psychiatric. Police sources indicated that the female criminal spent the last few hours without any shock about what happened and that they did not notice her in a state of distress.

Domestic violence

While in the department of Colonia (west of the country) the decline in domestic violence was substantial in 2021, in some areas of the department of Canelones (southeast of the country) the increase merited the opening of new units specialized in this area. For that reason, the Canelones Police Headquarters opened the fourth Domestic Violence Office.

In the department of Cologne, the figures of domestic violence fell by 30% annually, according to the Department Head, Adán Cuello, told the Communication Unit of the Ministry of the Interior.
