Stage 3 of the Tour of the Basque Country 2022, started in the city of Llodio to go to Amurrio on a 181 km route in which 5 mountain passes and two intermediate sprints were presented. The previous day left a pain in the Pro Team teams, as they had fought in addition to the mountain points and the intermediate sprints, the stage victory, something they ultimately failed to achieve because of the squeeze of the step imposed in the last 10 km by the major squad.

The winner of the previous day was Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe of the Quick Step Alpha Vinil, although he was not enough to take the lead from Primos Roglic who in the first day's prologue put himself at the top of the overall standings.

For this Wednesday, some runners would take their toll on the previous day's effort, so the pace that the best climbers put on the mountain led to several of the rivals who aspired to win at least the stage.

Ineos Grenadiers by Adam Yates and Colombian Daniel Felipe Martínez proposed a strong step in the pursuit of the three escapees, so that the Spaniard Cristián Rodríguez of Total Direct Energie would be left alone.

Meanwhile, in the past, the favorite cyclists set out to cut time with the escaped man making a very small selection of strong riders who would compete for the victory of the day, among them Rigoberto Urán and Daniel Martínez.

Roglic remained vigilant along with his teammate, Danish teammate Jonas Vingegaard of Jumbo Visma, not to lose first place overall. But on their wheel they made sure to go Remco Evenepoel from Quick Step Alpha Vinil second overall, as well as other cyclists who tried to get in a better position at least in the top 10.

Over the last 20 km to the finish line, a score of riders marked the step forward with the controlled escape and with a lot of nervousness in the face of the end given that the definition was given in a small false plane, but it tended to be ascending.

Martínez has put his work in favor of the Englishman Yates, since at constant times he was even seen attacking to select the group and reduce the chances of them being moved from their positions in the main standings.

The speed over the last 2 kilometers was quite high, predicting that there were attacks from riders such as Vlasov del Bora, Pello Bilbao of Bahrain Victorious. Adam Yates would have a puncture in the last kilometer and was left out of the final sprint dispute, which was won by local Pello Bilbao, who left Alaphilippe second and Vlasov third.

Rigoberto Urán of EF Education EasyPost and Daniel Martínez of Ineos Grenadiers were in the main group that played the final shot, although they did not manage to have the spark of speed needed to aspire to victory.

This is how the Colombians were in stage 3: Rigoberto Urán was placed 10th followed by Daniel Martínez who entered 12th, both with the same time as the winner of the day. Sebastián Henao was 61st in more than 7 minutes, Diego Camargo placed 85th more than 17 minutes, while Daniel Mendez and Sergio Higuita came in the last positions 139th and 141st respectively more than 19 minutes from Bilbao.

Daniel Felipe Martínez is still in force in the general standings, who is now 8th to 21sec behind Roglic and Rigoberto Urán who is now 13th, thus raising 27 places and being 40″ behind the leader.
