On Wednesday, April 6, the president of the Democratic Pole, Alexander López, announced that he will denounce the president of the Senate, the conservative congressman Juan Diego Gómez, for the unfortunate statements he made against the vice-presidential candidate of the Historical Pact, Francia Márquez, in which he linked her to the ELN guerrilla.

In a statement, the parliamentarian of the left-wing community referred to the statements that Gómez delivered in the midst of the political control debate against the national registry, Alexander Vega, where he lashed out against opposition leader Gustavo Petro and his vice-presidential formula, who lead the intent polls vote in the country.

“I had not dared to refer to your party, which accompanies the active ELN to its vice president and celebrate the appointment of this woman. The former FARC and the dissidents have spoken out in favor of their presidential campaign,” said the Conservative Party parliamentarian against the presidential candidate.

Faced with this, Alexander López requested from the collective, which is part of the Historical Pact, to provide guarantees for Francia Márquez so that it can advance its vice-presidential campaign “with peace and quiet”, stating that from the very entities of the State “his life is being put at risk, which cannot be tolerated in any way.”

He also indicated that the mentions of the President of the Senate generate a new act of violence against the vice-presidential candidate, who in recent weeks has received three threats against her life from paramilitary groups, which is why she asked the Government of Iván Duque to speak out against these events in order to avoid “any attack on candidates, especially against a virtuous woman who has only done since she was a child is to defend life, peace, territories and Colombia”.

“Based on this affront to democracy committed by the President of Congress in the midst of the electoral campaign, we will bring the legal actions necessary to protect the life, honor and good name of Francia Márquez in the face of reckless statements that put her life and that of her family at risk,” the letter states.

He also indicated that they will go to international bodies to denounce these serious allegations, of which he assured endanger the Social and Democratic State of Law “which the legislative branch of public power uses to put the life of a presidential candidate and leader of our country at risk”, calling for encircling France Márquez, who has been the target of constant attacks, especially since he won nearly 800,000 votes in the internal consultation.

Likewise, the president of the Democratic Pole requested that a space be made available in the plenary of the Senate in order for the vice-presidential candidate to be heard and to expose her career as the “slightest act of redress to which she is entitled” following the remarks of parliamentarian Juan Diego Gómez.

“The insulting, reckless and fallacious accusations made without any support by Senate President Juan Diego Gomez violate human dignity, the right to a good name and the honor of Rancia Márquez, endangering the life of our social, environmental leader and candidate for vice-presidency of the Historical Pact. These events once again place France as the object of the illegal armed actors who in the past attempted her life and forced her to leave its territory, moving to save the lives of her children,” concluded Alexander López.
