The mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boychenko, denounced on Wednesday that the Russian troops who keep that Ukrainian city surrounded “are trying to cover their tracks” and have started operating with mobile crematoria to make the “traces of their crimes” disappear.

In a message on his Telegram channel, the official said that “after the widespread genocide committed (in the city of) Bucha, the main leaders of Russia have ordered the destruction of any evidence of the crimes committed by their army in Mariupol”, the harbor city of southern Ukraine that is under siege and is subject of bombings for days.

“A week ago, some cautious estimates put the death toll at 5,000. But given the size of the city, the catastrophic destruction, the length of the blockade and the fierce resistance, tens of thousands of civilians in Mariupol could have fallen victim to the Russian occupiers,” he stressed.

In Mariupol, a city on the shores of the Azov Sea that had half a million inhabitants, there are only about 160,000 people left who, according to the Kiev government, do not have water, electricity, medicine or other basic services due to the attacks and siege they have been subjected to for weeks by Russian troops.

The mayor of the city believes that Russia is in “no hurry” to authorize any humanitarian operation that will completely evacuate the city and is working to silence potential witnesses to the atrocities that are being committed.

He also accused the Russians of “recruiting local terrorists” and members of special brigades to support them in these tasks.

“The world has not seen a tragedy of the magnitude that Mariupol has experienced since the Nazi concentration camps,” Boychenko reiterated.

The “racists” turned our entire city into a death camp. Unfortunately, the creepy analogy is gaining more and more confirmation. This is no longer Chechnya or Aleppo (Syria). This is the new Auschwitz,” he added.
