During the morning press conference at the Old Town Hall Palace, the head of government Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the march held last weekend against the Mandate Revocation consultation.
During the meeting with the media, a fragment of last Sunday's march was broadcast in which a woman was heard saying: “We are only asking active abstention for the mockery of the Revocation, we will not allow popular consultations to become everyday, only on this occasion are we asking for active abstention for the mockery of the revocation.”
Sheinbaum replied: “Well, let them live in an authoritarian country,” in addition to recalling that consultations are part of democracy and countries such as the United States or Sweden have done so on issues such as the legalization of marijuana.
On April 3, opposition groups called for marches in different states of the Mexican Republic against the popular consultation promoted by the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In Mexico City, contingents marched from the Angel of Independence to the Monument to the Revolution to express their rejection of the Mandate Revocation.
Sheinbaum told his production team: “Play the video of last Sunday's demonstration first, because it's worth it.” The video began and again spoke: “to hear the speech of conservatism”. “Imagine the discourse of authoritarian conservatism where the people don't decide, where a few decide,” he said.
Then he continued with another video and commented “it's very good”. The video was about a man who was asked about why it is important to go to vote on April 10, to which he replied “for at least three reasons: because we should not leave the decisions that belong to one so that others can make them for us and that they also decide for us. Secondly, because this exercise that is going to take place on April 10 of Revocation of Mandate is something unprecedented in the country, it is the first time that something will be done about it and it means generating producers as human beings who are able to exercise the rule of law.”
“The day of April coincides with an emblematic date around the life of General Emiliano Zapata, so it is necessary to go and express our vote,” he concluded in the video. Sheinbaum commented on this “because these are the two positions that can be seen on the networks, one very conservative, very undemocratic and the other, quite the opposite, promoting democracy.”
The Head of Government ended the press conference by recalling that April 10 will be an appointment with history. In addition, he stated that in the afternoon he would attend the Information Assembly on the Electrical Reform to be held on the esplanade of the Monument to the Revolution at 5:00 p.m. A reporter asked him about his attendance to which Sheinbaum replied: “Well, let's talk, or what, as Head of Government, can't I talk about the Electricity Reform?”
The event will be protected by 259 members of the Ministry of Public Security, supported by 28 vehicles, six motorcycle patrols. In addition, traffic police will monitor and speed up the movement of the area.
