Excellent news for Peruvians, and that is that Peruvian students will once again compete with the best exponents of mathematics in the world at the European Women's Mathematics Olympiad (EGMO) 2022, which will take place from April 6 to 12 in the city of Eger, in Hungary.
The international competition will be attended by more than 200 representatives from 55 countries such as the USA. USA, Russia, Germany, Spain, Japan, Brazil and others. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be done in a hybrid way (face-to-face and virtual).
Carla Fermín and Dariam Caparachín, students of the Saco Oliveros school, are part of the Peruvian delegation that will seek victory just as they did in the 2021 edition , where they won two gold medals.
STORIES THAT INSPIRE
Carla Fermín is a 17-year-old girl who mentions that competing again in the EGMO is a challenge that she faces with great responsibility. The teenager has three consecutive gold medals to her credit in this competition: Ukraine 2019, in the Netherlands (Netherlands) 2020 and Georgia 2021.
“This competition finds us with much greater experience than in previous editions. For my part, it is always a pleasure to represent my country internationally. These Olympics are also a great opportunity to know how much our level has increased for future competitions,” Carla said.
For his part, 16-year-old Dariam Caparachín will participate for the second time in a row in this Olympics. In 2021 he had his first participation and obtained the highest score from the Peruvian delegation and this year he wants to stay at the top of the podium.
“I feel that participating again will give me much greater confidence for my future, not only in the Olympics but also at the academic level. I have studied a lot and developed possible problems that we will have to solve at the event. It is key to concentrate, but we must also be very creative when it comes to pointing the way to the result, the judges rate that and it is an exercise that I practice almost always”, commented the student.
ROAD TO THE WORLD CUP
The Peruvian delegation is also made up of Flor Luna and Jasmine Chavarri. Mónica Martínez Sánchez, former world champion in mathematics and who is currently studying Pure Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, is the tutor of the team.
It should be noted that this will be the fifth time that Peru has been part of this Olympiad. In its first four appearances, Peru won a total of six gold medals, five silver and two bronze medals, an outstanding result for a team in this competition.
THREE-TIME CHAMPIONS IN BOTH SEXES
In 2021, Peru was crowned three-time champion in the 36th edition of the Ibero-American Mathematics Olympiad (IOM 2021), organized by Costa Rica and held from October 19 to 23 virtually.
Thanks to our compatriots Mario Pariona Molocho, Joaquín Guerra Camana and Diego Coronado Alcalá and Bruce Capcha Chanca, they managed to bring gold and silver medals and thus consecrate us as one of the greats in this contest.
The national delegation highlighted its great performance in the tournament in which 23 countries also participated, thus surpassing representatives from Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Puerto Rico, among others.
The students demonstrated their skills in topics such as Combinatorics, Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory, which they had to solve for two days in a total of nine hours.
The Ibero-American Mathematics Olympiad (IOM) is different from the World Olympiad and aims to stimulate the study of mathematics in the Ibero-American states, discover talented young people, foster friendly relationships and seek opportunities for the exchange of educational experiences among students from countries in the region.
