Ignacio Mier, the coordinator of the Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional Party (Morena) party, spoke about the controversy unleashed yesterday in the Chamber of Deputies over the refusal of congressmen to observe a minute's silence due to the loss of human life in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Similarly, he considered as “conservatism” the proposal submitted by the US Congress to remove the visa from officials who accused them of being “pro-Russian”.
It was through his official Twitter account that Ignacio Mier, taking up the statement of the United States Congress, endorsed Mexico's and the cherry party's stance on the conflict, arguing that the country totally condemns the invasion but rejects interference attitudes and pressure of all kinds.
“The position of #México in the Russia-Ukraine conflict is clear: we condemn this action and hope for peace. But we reject interfering attitudes and pressure of all kinds towards our country. The “black lists” refer to the darkest aspects of conservatism,” wrote the deputy of the Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional party (Morena).
During the Mexican Congress session last Tuesday, the deputy of the National Action Party (PAN), Mariana Gómez del Campo Gurza, proposed to observe a minute's silence for the fatalities left by the Russian invasion of Ukraine; this after Ukrainian authorities revealed that more than 400 bodies were recovered in the the city of Bucha, on the outskirts of Kiev, after Russian troops left the area.
Ukrainian citizens denounced the massacre committed by the Russian army in that city in the north of the country, which was besieged and bombed during weeks and in which hundreds of bodies were found in its streets, most of them civilians, after being recovered by the country's troops.
However, the deputies of the Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party squarely opposed the initiative of the panista, arguing that it could be a montage or that such action could mean the submission of Mexico to the United States. This situation caused great controversy among the congressmen and the citizens, so they sounded the cherry party for allegedly pronouncing itself openly as “pro-Russians”.
In response to the discussion in the Chamber of Deputies, the vice-coordinator of the Morena bench, Leonel Godoy, rejected the symbolic act of observing a minute of silence, since he considered that until that moment it was not known for sure whether it was some kind of montage.
In addition, the official made ironic comments against the PAN deputy Mariana Gómez del Campo, whom he invited to appear before international instances as a “war correspondent” to present the case.
The positioning of the deputies of the Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party prompted the Texan congressman, Vicente González, to present a proposal to withdraw their visa to enter the United States for 25 Mexican citizens as “pro-Russian”.
Vicente González indicated that although President López Obrador himself “continues to take a neutral public stance in the face of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” “the actions taken by members of his own Morena party and others suggest the opposite,” and he concluded by considering it unfortunate that the US neighbor himself did not has already joined international democracies in condemning Russia and imposing sanctions on it.
Among the officials who could lose their permission to enter the United States country are the names of the deputy for the Labour Party (PT), Gerardo Fernández Noroña, Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez, president of the PT, former deputy for Nuevo León, Santiago González Soto, among others.
