With the free way for Cesar Gaviria to carry out his own efforts and seek the support of the Liberal Party congressmen, the presidential candidate of the Team for Colombia, Federico Gutiérrez, met this Tuesday, April 5, with ten of the 15 Liberal Senators elected for the period 2022 - 2006.

After meeting last week with former President César Gaviria, sole leader of the Liberal Party, the applicant held this meeting with members of the Senate bench of the collective, the vast majority of whom have shown sympathy for their presidential aspiration and seek official party support for their political campaign.

Sources close to Gutiérrez's campaign told the media that during the meeting they talked about the country's problems, the solutions being proposed since his candidacy, the future of the elections and the peace process. Gutiérrez would have made it clear to them that he will comply with the agreements that were signed with the FARC and reiterated that there will be no return to a political discussion like the one presented during the 2016 plebiscite.

Some parliamentarians of liberalism were unable to attend lunch because they were not in Bogotá. However, the senators stated that they want to reach the campaign of the former mayor of Medellín, through institutional and not individual support since the first presidential round.

In addition, they asserted that the final decision will not only be in the hands of the bench, but also by former president César Gaviria, who is the sole leader and spokesperson of the party to advance the approaches with all the candidates. After Easter, the Liberal Party is expected to make a decision regarding its presidential support.

At lunch there were only five senators missing, including Mario Castaño, who is close to Gustavo Petro's campaign. Also Jhon Jairo Roldán, Fabio Amin, Juan Diego Echavarría and Alejandro Carlos Chacon. As Semana learned, César Gaviria, president of the collective, knew about lunch and did not see with bad eyes the meeting between his senators and the presidential candidate.

After lunch with liberalism, the right-wing candidate met with a group of more than 100 businessmen led by Mario Hernandez, who joined his presidential campaign. For his part, Gutiérrez assured them that “it is this trust that Colombia needs in order not to lose its democracy and its freedoms,” he said.

During this meeting, the presidential candidate argued that, “we must take care of jobs, the economy has to grow and build trust, that is why we are uniting the country, for what? In order for people to do well, it is the way to generate well-being. The only way to end poverty is for the economy to grow, for people to have income, education and opportunities.”

During his speech, Gutiérrez asked businessmen not to take their capital out of the country and to be empathetic to citizens who are living in poverty. “The message to Colombians is that we work together and hand in hand, that we move the country forward together and that we understand, that there is a large part of the population, which is 42%, that there are 21 million Colombians who are in poverty and that we all have to work for them, so that they are better and have more well-being,” he concluded. .
