April is a month full of interesting astronomical events, which are recorded in the space calendar of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).
This month we will be able to be part of space activities from our homes. We will see two new moons, a meteor shower, a solar eclipse, among other things. We may not be able to witness them clearly, but others can.
That's why we bring you the events that will happen around our planet this month.
THIS IS THE ASTRONOMICAL CALENDAR OF PERU:
Take note and enjoy these wonders of nature.
- PLANETARY DANCE - April 1 to 30:
April is a very important month, especially for observing the “planetary dance” that continues to unfold daily in the sky. To observe these events you must see the area of the eastern cardinal point, the area where the Sun rises and this must be done long before the solar star rises.
- NEW MOON - April 1:
The new moon occurred at exactly 1:24 a.m. on April 1, in the constellation Cetus, with our natural satellite located 386234 km from Earth. It will be the first of two new moons this month.
- MOON IN FOURTH CRESCENT - April 9:
In the case of the Quarter Crescent Moon it will occur at exactly 1:48am on April 9, and will be within the constellation Gemini, with the moon located at 403030 km from the planet Earth.
- PASSAGE OF THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION - 13 April:
All of Lima will be able to see this show on April 13, and this will be at approximately 5:36 a.m. Peru will have the opportunity to observe the International Space Station in the sky, and this will be seen very clearly. This space station will slowly move between the constellations.
- FULL MOON - April 16:
The full moon will occur at exactly 1:55 p.m. on April 16, and will occur in the constellation Virgo, with the satellite of our planet located 370265 km from Earth.
- METEOR SHOWER - April 16:
On April 16, another astronomical event arises and it is the long-awaited meteor shower, called “Las Líridas”, which will begin almost halfway through the month, and will be seen at their best during the early morning of April 22, that is, starting at 4:00 a.m.
- MOON IN THE LAST QUARTER - 23 April:
The Moon in the last quarter will occur exactly at 6:56 a.m. on April 23, in the constellation Capricornus, with our natural satellite located 372073 km from Earth.
- NEW MOON - April 30:
The new moon will occur exactly at 3:28 p.m. on April 30, in the constellation Aries, with the moon located 396520 km from planet Earth. This will be the second new moon of this month, which is also known as the “Black Moon”.
- PARTIAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN - April 30:
The partial eclipse will be seen from southern Peru. The places from which it will be seen most clearly will be from Moquegua, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Ica, Puno and Tacna. The time at which the eclipse will begin will be from 4:30 p.m. and will end at approximately 5:00 p.m. Note that solar eclipses can be dangerous if they are observed from direct way, so if you want to appreciate this natural wonder it is better to use appropriate astronomical glasses. This partial eclipse is also known as “the small bite of the Moon to the Sun”.
