Independiente Medellín defeated América de Cali 3-1 on penalties (3-3 equality on aggregate) and qualified for the group stage of the 2022 Copa Sudamericana on March 17. With goalkeeper Andrés Mosquera as a figure; the 30-year-old goalkeeper saved two penalties in the definition and established himself as the hero of the key among Colombian teams. Elvis Mosquera wasted another maximum penalty for the scarlets.

In the 90 minutes, DIM, who missed two penalties in the series, had scored thanks to a neglect of the rival defense that striker Luciano Pons took advantage of in the 24th. Before their audience, America unsuccessfully stroked the comeback of the 2-1 suffered in the first leg with an early goal by Carlos Sierra (minute 9) and another by Adrián Ramos in the 63rd.

This meeting, which took place at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium, was also marked by violent acts by the scarlet fans. Faced with this situation, Conmebol announced that this time America will be financially sanctioned for incidents in their stadium during the Copa Sudamericana match. The Cali club will have to pay a fine of 36 thousand dollars.

“América de Cali informs its fans, media and the general public that, following the incidents that occurred in the southern tribune in the match against Independiente Medellín, corresponding to the second leg of the 2022 Copa Sudamericana, we have again been sanctioned by Conmebol with a fine of USD 36,000”, announced the vallecaucano ensemble in a press release.

In addition, in the statement you can read that the team, which does not have a technical director at the moment, took advantage of the text to reject the violent acts that occurred last month and make a call to enjoy football in peace.

It should be noted that this is not the first time that America de Cali has been sanctioned for inappropriate conduct in its stadium. I even, in March of this year, the women's team played a closed-door match for similar acts.

“We reject these types of violent actions that harm the institution financially and invite our fans to live football in peace and good behavior inside and outside the country's stadiums,” the official letter reads.

On the other hand, let us remember that Juan Carlos Osorio left the scarlet draw due to the sum of bad results that left America outside the Copa Sudamericana and is not among the first eight teams in the BetPlay League that could give way to the home run.

Finally, next Sunday America will visit Atanasio Girardot Stadium to face Atlético Nacional for matchday 15 of the local tournament.
