This Monday, from the Colombian Basketball Federation, it was announced that for this season the Professional League of the Basketball League will not have the main teams in the country, since for this edition there will be no champion or runner-up last year.

“The Colombian Professional Basketball Division informs Colombian basketball lovers that the clubs Cimarrones del Chocó, Cóndores de Cundinamarca and Piratas de Bogotá, expressed this weekend through formal letters addressed to the Colombian Basketball Federation and the Professional Basketball Division, their no participation in the WPlay.co Professional Basketball League 2022-I, due to internal problems in their respective clubs”, can be read in the press release.

In addition, they explained that: “The Wplay Professional Basketball League 2022-I will be attended by seven (7) professional teams affiliated to the Professional Basketball Division of Colombia that will play the title of the opening tournament of the first half of the year, which will be played under the sports scheme that has been played during the last few seasons”.

Keep in mind that the event will start on April 21 at the Evangelista Mora Coliseum in Cali, which will continue to maintain the concept of sports concentration, a kind of bubble that brings together all the action of the tournament in the capital of the department of Valle del Cauca.

Although it was announced last year that the league would have a new sponsor to strengthen the competition, this year there were three fewer teams compared to the first half of 2021 edition. Already for the next semester, the league grew and had a tournament where 12 teams participated.

Although in this edition there are fewer teams to play in the league from the Colombian Professional Basketball Division, it was confirmed that the current modality of the format will be maintained to reduce costs. Now, it should be borne in mind that the lack of presence of teams in their cities and stadiums makes the league less attractive, a situation that results in a decrease in the number of people in the stands.

On the other hand, the Professional Basketball Division of Colombia has already announced that changes will come for the second half of 2022, and invited the teams that will not be in the first half of the year to return to participate. “We look forward to the return to the professional tournament of the teams that will not participate in the first tournament of the year for the Clausura tournament of the second half, which will be played in the round trip mode, to count on their extensive experience in the Colombian maderamens.”
