Volodymyr Zelensky asked the UN that the Russian authorities be tried for war crimes such as the Nazis in Nuremberg

The President of Ukraine spoke to the Security Council, where he proposed to create a court similar to the one that condemned the leaders of Hitler's government after the Second World War

Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky urged the Security Council to act “immediately” to stop the invasion of Russia and called for Vladimir Putin's country to be “held accountable” for “war crimes.”

Zelensky participated virtually in the UN Security Council after visiting Bucha, on the outskirts of Kiev, where he denounced a massacre of civilians that he accused Russian forces. “There is not a single crime that has not been committed there,” said the president.

“They killed women, children and families on the doorstep of their homes and tried to burn the bodies. They did it for the simple pleasure of killing them. They cut off their legs, arms and cut their throats. It is no different than what terrorist organizations like the Islamic State do,” Zelensky said.

He also held Russia responsible for creating a “global humanitarian crisis that could provoke famine.”

“There is the UN Security Council, but where is security? ”, he wondered. “There is no security here. Where are the guarantees that the UN must offer?” , he continued.

Zelensky assured that Russia committed the “most terrible crimes since the Second World War”. “Bucha is just an example of everything they've been doing,” he said. In this context, he proposed the creation of a tribunal similar to that in Nuremberg to try those responsible for the massacres and reminded the authorities of the Putin government that members of Hitler's government were convicted in that trial.

The president called for “punishing once and for all those who feel privileged to commit crimes and get away with it.” He said that the Russians feel “colonizers” in need of “wealth” and the Ukrainian people. “They kidnapped children, they looted cities, they're taking everything,” he said.

That is why he urged the UN to act immediately and to reform the Security Council system that allows the right of veto. “Should the UN close its doors? Do you think that international law no longer makes sense? If the answer is no, then act,” he said. “We must bring the aggressor to justice,” he added.

He also called for convening a global conference to strengthen the international security system and transform the UN.
