In 2009, Robert Downey Jr. gave life to the famous detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle in the film Sherlock Holmes. The lead was joined by actor Jude Law in the role of Dr. John Watson. Two years later, a sequel was released under the title Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, and the third installment will be released soon. According to new information, this new film will introduce a new character that will have an impact in the future.
The original story followed Sherlock and his faithful companion, Watson, on their adventures to fight a new enemy, as they disrupt a plot to save the country's security. In this film version, the brilliant British researcher not only stands out for his acumen in solving tracks, but also skillfully performs in boxing and fencing.
According to Variety, two series derived from this cinematic universe will arrive in the HBO Max catalog. The project made for television has been in conversation since 2020, but nothing was fully confirmed until the recent report. For now, there are no greater details about the story or the protagonists. Downey Jr. and Susan Downey with Amanda Burrell, Lionel Wigram and Warner Bros. Television will have credit as executive producers.
Guy Ritchie directed the film adaptation of Lionel Wigram's comics, inspired by Conan Doyle's books, and became a huge hit in modern cinema. The film grossed a total of $524 million globally and the second part exceeded that figure by $543 million, which is why Warner Bros. gave the green light to another sequel. The third film was officially announced by the company to be released in late 2020, but the pandemic caused multiple replacements in production.
Currently, Sherlock Holmes 3 does not yet have an official release date and filming has not started. However, it is clear that this flesh and blood version of the detective with Robert Downey Jr. will go ahead with the creation of new spin-off programs that will be released after the continuation on the big screen.
HBO Max is the new home of spin-offs
Since Peacemaker (derived from The Suicide Squad), other films have received derived fiction to expand their stories on a large scale and with the aim of focusing on secondary characters. The recent hit The Batman also joined this list of titles with the confirmation of a production about The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell, and another about Jim Gordon and the Gotham Police Department.
