Stage 2 of the Tour of the Basque Country 2022 took place from the town of Leitza to La Viana, on a 207.6 km route with 3 mountain passes, some slopes and two intermediate sprints.
There would begin the competition from the road mode since the first day took place in a 7.51 km prologue in the city of Hondarribia, which was won by the Slovenian champion of this round in 2021, Primoz Roglic of Jumbo Visma, with a time of 9 minutes 48 seconds.
The 2021 Olympic time trial champion arrives to defend his title along with a fairly strong team. On the first day, the best Colombian was the national chrono champion, Daniel Felipe Martínez of the Ineos Grenadiers.
This Tuesday was consolidated with an arrival for the fastest runners, so tension was experienced during the second part of the race as 4 men escaped from kilometer 155 to reach the finish line.
Julen Amezqueta from Caja Rural, Ander Okamika from Burgos BH, Ibai Azurmendi from the Euskaltel and Ibon Ruiz from Kern Pharma, achieving an important distance in time to go looking for mountain spots and intermediate sprints.
The squad was aware of not letting the fugue go so far, keeping them at a moderate distance, so they had to set a tiring pace of competition for many.
Little by little, teams like Roglic's Jumbo Visma, sought to help cut time for the 4 escapees, then collaborated in the cause the Quick Step Alpha Vinil, who hoped to launch the Frenchman and current world champion Julian Alaphilippe ahead of the end.
As for coffee growers, Diego Camargo of EF Education EasyPost suffered a fall in the absence of 33 km of the finish line when the race was launched, however, it did not represent major complications for the Boyacense.
The escape still with 25 km of the finish line managed to lead the peloton in 1 minute 44 seconds, while the group of favorites seemed to be regulating the pace and then accelerating to the last 20 km to the end, even so the four men at the top increased their difference by getting up to 2 minutes ahead.
In the absence of 10 km, the rent of the riders traveling ahead was 1 minute 50 seconds, which suggested that they would take the victory of the day and the lead in the overall classification.
The squad sought to react by cutting time, but everything was consolidated so that the victory remained for Ibon Ruiz from Kern Pharma who did not wait to organize with his fugue teammates and it came out when they were 7 km left to finish in Viana.
Finally, the main group, where the favorites came from, approached 23 seconds when the stage was only a kilometer and a half away.
Interested teams together with their sprinters jumped in, caught on the run and positioned themselves to pitch to their main cards in search of victory.
The World Champion Julian Alaphilippe of Quick Step Alpha Vinil would enter the finish line first to win the day, after being thrown by the young Remco Evenepoel a few meters from the finish line.
As far as the Colombians are concerned, the 6 arrived with the same time as the platoon holding the pace of the race and waiting for their ground to arrive in order to stand out. This is how the coffee growers were on day 2 of Itzulia:
Diego Camargo (EF) was 26th, Daniel Martínez (Ineos) 32nd, 35th Rigoberto Urán (EF), Sergio Higuita (Bora) entered the 57th place, while Daniel Mendez (Kern Pharma) and Sebastián Henao (Astana) were 98th and 99th respectively.
The news of the day revolves around the soachuno Daniel Martínez, who entered the top 10 of the general standings.
