After a fire broke out on Thursday, March 31 at Mercado Libertad (also known as San Juan de Dios) in Guadalajara, Jalisco, the government of This Tuesday, March 5, Enrique Alfaro will distribute 10 million 650 thousand pesos among the tenants who were affected by the accident.
According to the mayor of Guadalajara, Pablo Lemus Navarro, each of the affected tenants - the figure has not been specified - will receive support of 25,000 pesos, which can be used without the need to return them to the municipality.
After being closed for three days, the San Juan de Dios market reopened its doors on Sunday, April 3, but only 540 stores resumed their sales work, as no major damage was reported. Lemus Navarro indicated that by Monday he expected a thousand 460 more to open. However, it was not until Tuesday, March 5, that another 1,500 stores reopened, totaling two thousand.
He also pointed out that on Thursday he will propose to the plenary session of the City Council the cancellation of the municipal land use tax for all three thousand premises during 2022, even if they have not been affected, so that it is later sent to the Congress of Jalisco. For tenants who have already made their corresponding payment, they will receive a bonus for next year, Lemus said.
As for the rehabilitation, the City Council and the state government will be responsible for the works, although the estimated time for this work has not been mentioned. It should be noted that the Guadalajara City Council announced that 426 premises were damaged after the fire, of which 247 were reported to have severe damage and 179 had minor injuries.
The fire started around 2:00 in the morning and was controlled around 4:55 that same day. More than 300 Civil Protection elements from the municipalities of Guadalajara, Tonalá, Tlaquepaque, Tlajomulco and Zapopan participated in the mitigation efforts, as well as 65 support units from different corporations in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area.
It should be recalled that after the fire, no injured persons or fatalities were reported; however, the fire spread to the three main floors of the market. The most affected area was recorded in the second level, in the food zone.
Meanwhile, the National Guard, together with the state and Zapopan police, cordoned off the area to prevent possible predators, commented Juan Pablo Hernández, Guadalajara police commissioner.
On March 31, patrols were scheduled to be delivered to the municipality of Guadalajara, but due to the fire recorded in the San Juan de Dios market it was not possible. Faced with this, Morena's legislators, Mariana Fernández and Candelaria Ochoa, demanded such delivery within the established times.
Pablo Lemus acknowledged the delay and announced that the delivery of the patrols will take place on Wednesday, April 6. “The delivery of patrols was scheduled for this morning, but due to the crisis in San Juan de Dios (...) we decided to reschedule the delivery of those patrols for the day after tomorrow,” he said.
