Fernando Gaviria is one of the most absent Colombian cyclists in the first part of the European cycling calendar. Well, with him there are already several significant casualties in teams from the old continent where they usually stand out, as is the case with his new teammate Álvaro Hodeg, who also had a serious traffic accident last December.

In addition to the Monterian Hodeg and the Antioquia Gaviria, there is the absence of Boyacán Santiago Umba from Drone Hopper Androni Giocattoli in the peloton and that of Zipaquireño Egan Bernal, who was the most heartfelt casualty in the main races at the start of the season.

They have had some physical complications that have not allowed them to put a number on their bib to compete, at least Egan Bernal and Álvaro Hodeg seem to have long recovery days, as their accidents and especially their injuries transcended an even more serious plan.

So far neither of them has a date of return to competitions and it is not ruled out that at least this 2022 they do not attend races, being projected mainly for 2023. Although Bernal is the one who has shown himself best in recovery, spending in just two months training with little load and demand, hoping most of all to improve his sensations.

However, the good news for Colombian sports is the return to training of Fernando Gaviria. The 27-year-old sprinter has been considered one of the best in the world in his specialty, although for a few seasons now, especially since the start of Covid 19, his performance is not the same as that which his team or his fans were accustomed to.

It is worth remembering that Fernando was one of the first Colombians and cyclists in the world to be infected with the virus, resulting in a drop in lung quality and physical conditions for racing.

Even so, the Antioquian has been persevering in the face of bad situations, seeing him train with dedication and obtaining some good results in some races.

However, his return to the Tour de France and the big laps is something that would not be on the table for Gaviria, as the Giro d'Italia would start in almost a month, for which he would think he is not ready yet.

While for the 2022 Tour de France, his UAE Team Emirates team would be totally focused on seeking a third overall victory with Tadej Pogacar, so he would not be planning to achieve significant results with the Colombian sprinter.

The only option that would be available, for now, would be the Vuelta España that starts in August, but nothing has been confirmed.

For now, his training is on track as he demonstrated on social networks, hoping that soon he will be called by his squad to start a block of competitions that will begin to put him in tune with the rest of his teammates and thus be able to face the strongest rivals in the peloton, as he did a few months ago.
