This Monday began the Tour of the Basque Country 2022 with an individual time trial of 7.51 kilometers, in the municipality of Hondarribia, leaving as the winner the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), a specialist in this modality. Daniel Martínez (INEOS Grenadiers) was the best Colombian in the race after finishing in square 11 with a time of 10 minutes and 9 seconds.

Roglic met expectations in the first stage of the race, setting a record of 9 minutes and 48 seconds, and beating the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step), who also started as a favorite in the day. The third stage of the podium went to Frenchman Rémi Cavagna (Quick-Step), who scored 10 seconds and four seconds.

The performance of 'Dani' Martínez in the course of the test went from more to less, since, at the cut of the first set, he placed seventh, just 10 seconds apart from Roglic. Already for the final stage of the fraction, although he lost time, the shot helped him lose 21 seconds to the Slovenian, who has just won the overall classification of Paris-Nice.

Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) also arrived with the intention of fighting for the first places in the Vuelta a Basque Country, remembering that just a week ago he won the title at the Volta a Catalunya. However, his numbers were not the best, as he ranked 56th with 10 min and 33 seconds. This is reflected in 45 seconds lost to the leader of the race.

Finally, another Colombian protagonist on Spanish roads was Rigoberto Urán. The 'Urrao Bull' opened its season in early March in the Tyrrhenian-Adriatic, and now in the Basque Country it will continue its preparation to arrive as the best form in the Tour de France, its main goal of the year.

“A pretty good route, we passed the individual time trial without problems, we'll see tomorrow what the Vuelta has in store for us. Everything influences, every second is important and you try to do your best every day,” said the cyclist from Antioquia after crossing the finish line.

The route presented some challenges for cyclists, since, in addition to having several slopes, sections were present in cobblestone. This forced riders to have to show adequate control of their bikes to avoid falls or waste time at the finish line.

It should be recalled that the last Colombians to climb the podium in the Vuelta al País Basque were Sergio Luis Henao and Nairo Quintana, who finished second and third in the 2016 edition. However, only the latter was able to lift the title of the overall standings (2013).

The runners, in fact, will start by climbing a third-class port and, later, they will face others of second and third level of demand.

The longest climb of the day will be Aguilar Gaina, with its 12.7 km at 3.1%. And, once this obstacle is overcome, there will be a prolonged descent, including some slopes, before reaching the finish line.
