The entry into force of the change to daylight saving time in Mexico sparked a wave of memes on social media from users who were dissatisfied with the decree - which has been carried out since 1966.

With the exception of Sonora and Quintana Roo, the entities of the Republic set their clock forward by one hour in the early hours of April 04; while some municipalities on the northern border will carry it out on April 13.

This caused some early risers to witness with surprise the change in the digits of their cell phones (which are usually automated for this transition), which jumped from 01:59am to 03:00am, without going through 02:00 hours.

“I traveled an hour to the Future”, “It feels weird not having lived at 2 am”, “And magically it was 3AM”, “An hour lost in space-time”, “Thank you summer time, you don't know how much I like to be taken away from an hour of sleep”, were some of the comments shared on Twitter.

Meanwhile, other jokes that were most often repeated were “the reproach” that summer time “stole an hour of our lives/ sleep”, so, as a joke, they demanded that it be returned to them; especially, those who had to work with this change.

Despite the fact that a large part of the users were dissatisfied with the initiative, some people are currently unaware of the objective for which it was proposed.

The time change in Mexico came into force during the government of Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León, being made official on January 4, 1966 in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF): it was stipulated that the measure would reduce demand consumption of electricity and fuels for its generation, which would also contribute to reducing the emission of pollutants.

However, a considerable number of opinions on the Twitter platform have agreed on the inefficiency of this schedule, as well as the difficulty of citizens to adapt to it: “Year after year I hope they remove it”, “Take it away, for God's sake”, “It's no use”, they commented.

Despite having been implemented for more than five decades, summer time in Mexico could have its hours counted if the Federal Government commits to analyzing the results of the objectives for which it was applied.

It should be recalled that the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), has sought to eradicate the decree since his capacity as Head of Government of the former Federal District ( 2000-2005), by attempting to prevent its implementation by 2001 but without obtaining the endorsement of the Federal level.

However, during the current six-year period, various personalities and parties have been dissatisfied with the change of schedule, so the initiative to eliminate such an instruction should be presented in the coming months if it were to be desired citizens will be freed from it by 2023.

Summer time will last six months, as it will last until two in the morning on October 31.
