The leader of the National Action Party (PAN), Marko Cortés Mendoza, rushed against Manuel Barlett Díaz, head of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and once again criticized the Electric Reform promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), which was recently discussed in the Open Parliament forums in the Chamber of Deputies and which is about to be put to the vote.

In this regard, the blue and white indicated that the counter-reform that has been promoted by the Government of Mexico and by the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) bench could generate energy shortages and cuts in the supply of the service on a “discretionary” basis in some federal entities of the country because it will be in the hands of Barlett Diaz.

“Mexico must not forget that Barlett is one of the darkest characters in Mexican politics, a master of simulation and fraud, an expert in deception, who received a CFE with profits and broke it, an expert in electoral raccoon, responsible for the fraud against Manuel Clouthier and Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, in 1988,” said the panist through a statement.

He also indicated that the name of the head of the CFE is linked to the murder of journalist Manuel Buendía and Kiki Camarena, an undercover agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), who managed to infiltrate the ranks of the Guadalajara Cartel in 1980. On the other hand, Cortés Mendoza indicated that Barlett owns 25 luxury residences and that he allowed his son to sell overpriced mechanical fans during the peak months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For all of the above, the Bartlett Act will not pass. Acción Nacional cannot allow the electricity industry to remain in the hands and in the opinion of a character with this background, who represents the worst of the old Mexican politics to which President López Obrador himself also belongs,” he said.

In addition, the 44-year-old politician assured that the constitutional reform presented by the Tabasqueño will be stopped by the PAN Bank because distribution will suggest high costs for Mexican households, will have negative impacts on the environment and will leave the use of clean and cheap energy second, since the costs electricity generation will increase from 31.2 to 52.5 per cent, which will result in a very significant increase in the average electricity bill of households.

Cortés Mendoza highlighted that the PAN bench proposes that the 70 billion pesos that are currently allocated in the form of subsidies to the CFE, be invested in solar panel programs in homes for basic consumption. He also said that the PAN “proposes an Electricity Reform that promotes clean and cheap energy, where Mexicans can access electricity at a low cost in all rural and urban areas of the country.”

However, this was not the first time that the party leader had expressed his discrepancies with respect to the reform presented and promoted by AMLO, as he recently called it “highly harmful” to Mexico. In addition, the panista indicated that, if the changes to the legal framework were approved, it would cause a loss of jobs, a shortage of energy, as well as an increase in the cost of electricity, so he predicts that blackouts could start in the coming months in the 32 states of the republic.
