It became known that the United States expelled more than 600 Colombians, under the health standard that allows undocumented migrants to be deported, after negotiations with the Colombian government. These citizens arrived in the country on six flights, which were paid for by the American authorities.

Migration Colombia, in a statement, explained that the deportation measure works in a coordinated manner through permanent communication between the Homeland Security of the United States and the entity. He also indicated that there is a monthly flight called the deportees flight, in which about 90 people arrive on average.

The US border patrol said that, between October 2019 and February 2022, the migration flow increased by more than 20,000 percent: from 42 monthly detainees at the end of 2019 to about 9,600 at the beginning of 2019.

“After talks with the Colombian government, in March 2022, DHS began repatriating Colombian citizens to Colombia in accordance with the Title 42 public health order,” a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official told AFP.

It is noteworthy that, former Republican President Donald Trump imposed Title 42, which allows the expulsion of undocumented migrants claiming that they may be carriers of covid-19. Now with Joe Biden's administration, it banned the placement of minors in detention centers while the legal situation is being resolved.

This year when there were record numbers of Colombians trying to cross the border, the vast majority through Yuma, in Arizona. Similarly, since the application of Title 42, more than 1.7 million people have been expelled from the United States by this route, mostly Mexicans and Central Americans.

“To single adults and family units that are on the southwest border,” the source said. An official from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said that on March 4 it resumed flights to Colombia and “hundreds of Colombians” have been expelled, says Title 42.

It is noteworthy that in that country the number of Covid-19 cases averaged 27,000 daily in recent days compared to a peak of 700,000 in mid-January, so the community has asked Biden to suspend the application of this rule.

It should be recalled that Biden had committed to reversing Trump-era immigration policies, the CDC, under his administration, extended Title 42 in August 2021 and again in January, due to the delta and omicron variants, respectively.

“passengers are subjected to a medical examination before boarding”, they must wear a mask, test negative for covid-19, have a temperature below 37.2 ºC and have no symptoms related to the coronavirus in order to travel,” said DHS official.

“After considering current public health conditions and greater availability of tools to combat Covid-19 (such as vaccines and highly effective therapies), the CDC director has determined that an order suspending the right to introduce migrants to the United States is no longer necessary,” DHS said. .
