Almost a year after the collapse of two cars on Metro Line 12 on an elevated stretch, which occurred on May 3, 2021, 127 affected families have been treated, according to the Executive Committee for Victim Care of Mexico City (CEAVI), equivalent to 98 percent of the victims.
The support provided by CEAVI consists of five main areas: housing, education, employment and compensation, as well as medical care (which includes psychological help and rehabilitation). It should be recalled that in the accident 26 people were killed and more than 70 injured.
To date, 24 of the 26 families have been compensated in the amount of 1 million pesos, while the money for the remaining two is held in the CDMX Victims Fund. This amount is different from the 5 million 46 thousand 502 pesos that were given as “emerging support”. As for the injured, only 96 persons have been financially compensated, depending on the severity of their afflictions. In total, a sum of 30 million 740 thousand pesos was granted.
With regard to education, 267 subsistence grants have been awarded that will cover up to higher level studies or when the affected adolescents, girls, boys and young people turn 30 years old. Similarly, 24 scholarships have been awarded in private schools at different levels of education.
With regard to employment, the CDMX government “provided 94 jobs in the public sphere (both at the federal and local levels”, in addition to 104 economic supports for self-employment and the 20 jobs granted by the business sector.
In the area of housing, the support granted so far consists of 71 housing units and 31 housing improvement supports. Similarly, 33 households have received financial assistance for income each month. With regard to health, medical and psychological care has been provided to 100 per cent of the victims who were affected through the National Institute of Rehabilitation (INR).
It should be recalled that on March 28, the head of government of CDMX, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured that the rehabilitation of Line 12 of the Metro Collective Transport System (STC) would be completed before the end of 2022. “Each section is different, it is not an executive project that is unique for the entire elevated section (...) but that each part has its own characteristics and several studies have had to be carried out,” he said.
For his part, the Secretary of Works and Services of the CDMX, Jesús Esteva Medina, reported that the section that collapsed between the Tezonco and Olivos station on May 3 will be completely rebuilt and three locks will be placed in its structure, instead of the two that it had. Meanwhile, the underground section will be enabled until the works are completed. He also commented that 95% of the cost of works is contributed by construction companies.
On the other hand, María de la Luz Alcántar, who carried out the integration of the investigation folder on this case, was awarded by the head of the Prosecutor's Office General de Justicia (FGJ) of the CDMX, Ernestina Godoy, on April 2. “The resolution has set a precedent for justice in our country,” he said.
So far, 10 officials public authorities in Mexico City have been identified as suspected of being responsible for the accident.
