Golden Age: how was the wedding between the daughter of Lazaro Cardenas and Abel Salazar

The wedding between Alicia Cardenas Solórzano, daughter of former president of Mexico, Lazaro Cardenas, and Abel Salazar attracted attention since it took place, in 1944, because everyone at the ceremony looked happy in such luxury, except for the actor.

During the Golden Age, Abel Salazar's face stood out on the big screen since he was 24, when he made his debut in the seventh art in the film La casa del rencor (1941). It is said that, after that film, she moved away from the cameras because Gloria Marín had broken her engagement to start a romance with Jorge Negrete.

It was until 1944 that he returned to the public eye, and not so much because of his acting talents, but because he joined in marriage with none other than Alicia Cardenas, one of the daughters of former President Lazaro Cardenas.

The wedding was only for the civilian and was held on a Monday in February 1944 in the San Ángel Inn neighborhood, where one of the most sumptuous residences of the General was located. Senior government officials, politicians, figures from the artistic guild and, above all, the press were invited to the ceremony.

The actor's union with Alicia was portrayed like no other wedding, since both were renowned characters in the upper echelons of society and it was expected that everything would happen between luxuries, and so it was.

According to journalist Rosario Sansores in the magazine Mañana, everything was done to ensure that the bride and groom enjoyed their big day. They married and celebrated in the courtyard of Lazaro Cardenas's house, which was arranged with artificial flowers due to the season.

“For this ceremony the courtyard was paved, because after the signing of the marriage contract, a beautiful reception was offered. The too cold temperature disturbed the ladies and so, under the awning, the small tables arranged in order, were completely filled. The trunks of the sparse trees artificially wore, pink cherry blossoms, and white plum blossoms,” Sansores wrote.

The afternoon was enlivened by two orchestras, one of mariachi and one of string. By the time Alicia Cardenas showed up, going down some stairs, they played Blue Danube, then Memories of Love and On the Waves.

She wore a satin dress and for her waist to show off, the skirt stood out thanks to the fact that she wore a crinoline. The young woman shone with her outfit and the big smile she gave to the guests, unlike Abel, who was portrayed uncomfortably in all the photographs.

People doubted the reason why Salazar would have married Alicia, because his face was serious, he was not seen smiling in the pictures about their wedding published and, on some occasions, he avoided looking directly into the cameras or his wife.

Despite the different comments that were made about the wedding and the semblant of the protagonist of Laura's Sin, the couple procreated two daughters, Leticia and Alicia. Some say that their marriage lasted just over a year, others point out that they would rather have separated in 1950 after six years, or in 1957, after 13 years of relationship and shortly before they reunited with Gloria Marín.

Once the divorce was signed, Abel resumed his engagement with Gloria Marín, whom he married in 1958, this being his second failed marriage.
