BTS has positioned itself as the Korean artist who has represented his country, being nominated twice for the Grammy Awards, however, he was not the only one from South Korea to be nominated for these prestigious awards.
Through the 63 editions of the Grammy Awards that have been held, several Korean singers have positioned themselves as winners in different categories. It was in 1993 when, for the first time, one of the awards of the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences went to South Korea.
During the 35th Grammy Awards opera singer Sumi Jo was recognized with one of these awards in the Best Opera Recording category for her performance of R. Trauss's Die Frau Ohne Schatte (The Woman Without Shadow) with the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra; she played the role of Falcon.
That was not the only time that Sumi Jo's name was among the nominees for the Grammys, because in 1996 it was again considered to win the prize for the same category, on that occasion it was for Tancredi, the work of Gioacchino Rossini and together with a team, mostly Italian.
Sumi Jo is a soprano recognized for her vocal abilities. He began his studies in his country, South Korea, at the Sun Hwa School of Art. Subsequently, he obtained his diploma at the Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Since studying in Italy, he has performed different performances with European orchestras and operas, occasionally joining Latin American musicians as his voice has always called for conductors.
When Sumi Jo was still in her 20s, she managed to catapult her career internationally thanks to her performances, but also because of her albums. He has recorded more than 30 pieces in his almost 40 year career.
On the other hand, BTS was the first K-Pop group to be nominated for the Grammy Awards in 2021 and they also managed to be the first to bring a Korean act to the gala. They were listed in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for their hit Dynamite.
The Bangtan Boys competed with Taylor Swift and Bon Iver with Exile, Justin Bieber and Quavo with Intentions, J Balvin, Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa and Tainy with One Day and Lady Gaga and Araiana Grande with Rain on me.
When the 2021 nominations were announced, Sumi Jo sent a warm message to her compatriots, hoping that they too could bring a Grammy to South Korea.
“I sincerely hope that BTS will receive the glory and happiness of winning a Grammy Award this year, just as I was previously honored,” the soprano wrote in a tweet.
He has also covered BTS songs on several occasions, which he shares on his YouTube channel. She also shared that, for her, the performance of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook is a source of pride for her country.
In 2021 BTS failed to win the Grammy, as Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga were the ones who took it. However, in 2022 the DNA interpreters entered the Academy contest again and Army hopes that this year they will get their first gramophone.
For the 64th Grammy Awards for the fourth time, a Korean artist was nominated; again BTS were nominated for Best Duo/Group Pop Performance by Butter.
