The Game of Thrones universe will reflect the expansion of the literary saga on the small screen with House of the Dragon. The story will work as a prequel, as the events take place 300 years earlier than what was seen in the original HBO production that ended airing in 2019. The eighth and final season did not leave the audience very happy in the world, and this upcoming series promises to revive interest in this fantastic world created by George R. R. Martin. Here we tell you more details about everything that is known about this title.

Synopsis and plot of the original book

Primarily, the premise focuses on the Targaryen House three centuries before its almost complete extinction. We will meet Viserys, who will have to become King Jaehaerys's successor to the Iron Throne, although he might not be ready enough to take on such responsibility. In addition, other characters that will also play a major role in this plot are Prince Daemon, Princess Rhaenyra and Princess Rhaenys; and other families such as the Velaryons, the Hightowers, the Lannisters and the Strong.

The spin-off is an adaptation of the novel Fire and Blood (2018), which delves into the origins of the Dragon House from the landing of Aegon to the regency of Aegon III in Westeros. This book tells how these nobles and dragon holders survived the Curse of Valyria and settled on the island of Dragonstone.

According to the official plot, the first published volume “tells us, in great detail, the story of such a fascinating family: starting with Aegon I Targaryen, creator of the iconic Iron Throne, and followed by the rest of the generations of Targaryens who fought fiercely to retain power, and the throne, until the arrival of the civil war that almost ended them.” In this way, he intends to answer what happened in the events of the Dance of the Dragons and what life was like before, when dragons crossed the skies.

Who is in the cast and where was it filmed?

The main cast of House of the Dragon is Matt Smith as Daemon; Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen; Paddy Considine as Viserys Targaryen; Eve Best as Rhaenys Targaryen; Steve Toussaint Corlys Velaryon; Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower ; Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower; Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole; and Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria. Other actors in the production include John Macmillan, Savannah Steyn, Wil Johnson, Jefferson Hall, Gavin Spokes, Ryan Corr, Matthew Needham, Graham McTavish, David Horovitch and Bill Paterson.

The season is written by George R. R. Martin himself along with Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, the latter directed several episodes of Game of Thrones. The film was directed by Kilner, Geeta Patel, Greg Yaitanes and Sapochnik, and filming took place at Leavesden studios, Watford (UK), as well as in Los Angeles, Ireland and Spain (specifically in the cities of Cáceres, Trujillo and Granada).

Release date on HBO Max

HBO Max will present the first episode of House of the Dragon on August 21 and will continue with the broadcasting of the rest of the season weekly. There will be ten chapters in total that will focus on the history of the Targaryen House three centuries before Daenerys begins her journey to the Throne as the Mother of Dragons. It is still unknown whether television fiction will be renewed for a second season, but an announcement like this would not be surprising, because its predecessor had eight installments that were released year after year under the great expectation of the global audience.
