For seven nights in April, 13 Colombian artists representing different genres and sounds will be presented at the first edition of the Spotify EQUAL Festival to make a statement for gender equality at full volume.
The festival, which is part of the global EQUAL initiative and is the platform's first live event in Colombia, will feature Colombia's most important female voices: Goyo, Paola Jara, Andrea Echeverri, Lido Pimienta, Juliana Velásquez, Ventino, Nidia Gongora, Elsa and Elmar, Karen Lizarazo, Farina, María Cristina Silver, Bad Milk and Las Villa.
According to Spotify, these artists have more than 3.4 million monthly listeners on the platform, although, “currently, only one in five artists on the charts is a woman, according to the USC Annenberg study on the representation of women in the music industry.”
This is why this initiative was born “to begin to change this disparity, we must expand the work of women creators and generate more opportunities for emerging artists. That is the reason for the global “EQUAL” initiative, according to Mia Nygren, Managing Director for Spotify in Latin America.
He added, at Spotify “we want to do our part: we know that when we empower artists, more people listen, and that music shapes the future. We are excited to bring the EQUAL playlist to a live experience for the first time, with a spectacular line up.”
The opening of the Festival will be Goyo, who is promoting her first solo work, and said that “the best thing about being a woman in the industry right now is that we can use our platforms to say many things with our female voice, building a path for all women.”
In his presentation, Goyo will perform the soundtrack of his life that was chosen by HBO Max for the album and the documentary “En Letra de Otro” as “Na na na”, his first single as a solo artist, in which he tells the story of a woman and her freedom in making her own choices.
In addition, he performs iconic songs such as Tito Puente's “Hey how it goes”, Shakira's “Anthology” and Ella Fitzgerald's “Summertime”, which he gave a personal touch with that unique peaceful rap sound with Condoto flavor.
Finally, Goyo said that “the EQUAL Festival will give women artists a voice to continue using their voice as a tool to make their music known.”
For her part, one of the most important representatives of popular music, Paola Jara, said she was “very proud to be able to represent women in this first edition of the Equal Festival and of course my genre, popular music”.
The legendary Andrea Echeverri stated that “there are spaces that women are conquering and, thanks to feminist movements, songs like Cosita Seria and Oye Mujer are being validated and they are becoming more meaningful because they are perfect for everything that is happening”.
