The Association of Protectors of Colombian Fauna (Aprofac) warned that more than 15,000 chigüiros are at risk of dying in the municipality of Paz de Ariporo, in the department of Casanare, in the face of the severe droughts caused by the high temperatures that occur in the region.
As announced by the Association through its Twitter account, the species is currently facing two difficulties: the lack of puddles to drink water and plants to be able to feed.
In a video shared through the same social network, Aprofac showed how the chigüiros of Paz de Ariporo are adrift in the middle of a small pool of mud surrounded by miles of sand and dust, with no plants or pure water they can consume.
According to the Association and the various groups of environmentalists and inhabitants of the area who have denounced the situation, they consider that not only climatic conditions have influenced the droughts that cross the territory, but also the operations of oil companies in the area.
Faced with the situation, Aprofac called on the national government, congressmen and all candidates for the presidency to implement actions that guarantee the protection and survival of the chigüiros of Casanare.
“Mr. candidate for the presidency of Colombia, what will you do to avoid this cruelty due to environmental damage to the ecosystem, the lack of environmental authority that you support this APROFAC complaint?” , wrote the Association through its Twitter account.

Guillermo Pérez, director of the Casanare Departmental Risk Management Unit, said in a dialogue with Blu Radio that the firm has already dealt with the case and that they are currently supplying water to the chigüiros in the department.

The official then pointed out that, despite the fact that complaints made by the population have been dealt with, they have had difficulty in bringing the precious liquid to some areas due to the poor conditions presented by certain roads. However, he assured that the office is addressing the situation and indicated that, at the moment, there have been no deaths of chigüiros.
However, Aprofac informed Semana magazine that it filed a right of petition with the Ministry of Environment, Corporinoquia, the Attorney General's Office, the Mayor's Office of Peace of Ariporo and the Government of Casanare, in order to commit to dealing with these cases immediately.
