The LAPD prepared to arrest Will Smith after he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars, according to the ceremony's producer, Will Packer.
In a preview of his interview with the show Good Morning America, which will be broadcast this Friday in full, the producer assured that agents of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) appeared at the Dolby Theater and asked Rock if he wanted to press charges against Smith.
“They said 'let's go get him. We're ready, we're ready to arrest him now. You can press charges, '” said the producer.
According to Packer, as the agents detailed the options, Rock, also present in the conversation, insisted that he did not want to take any action.

“Until there came a point where I said, 'Rock, let them end, '” he said.
But apparently, the comedian insisted that he didn't want them to do anything and the producer didn't interact with Smith either.
This statement contradicts a statement in which the Hollywood Academy clarified that it asked Smith to leave the ceremony after the incident but he refused, although he admitted that he “could have managed the situation differently.”
This statement has been questioned by some gala workers, interviewed by Variety magazine, who claim that this option was considered but the actor's departure was never proposed.
The Hollywood Academy invited actor Will Smith on Wednesday to send a written statement about his conduct at Sunday's Oscar gala.
The actor has 15 days to send that statement before on April 18 the Academy “takes any disciplinary action”, which could be the “suspension, expulsion or any other sanction permitted in the statutes”.
One of the gala presenters, Wanda Sykes, criticized on Ellen DeGeneres' show the Academy's permissiveness to the actor.

“You assault someone, they escort you out of the building and that's it. But to let it go on... I thought it was disgusting,” said Sykes, who then had to take the stage to continue conducting the ceremony.
The presenter also felt that the fact that they let Smith enjoy the rest of the gala and accept the Oscar sent “the wrong message” to viewers.
The Academy has also raised the tone in its latest statement, which calls Smith's action a “traumatic and deeply shocking event to witness in person and on television.”
He has also apologized to Rock, thanking “his resilience on stage”.
“We also apologize to our nominees, guests and spectators for what happened during what should have been a celebratory event,” he added.
“Things developed in a way we couldn't have anticipated,” the organization justified.
