Passion of Christ in Iztapalapa: who will play Jesus and Mary in the 179th edition

After two years of absence from the public, the performance of the Passion of Christ returns in Iztapalapa. A few days after the 179th edition, the Organizing Committee for Holy Week in Iztapalapa (COSSIAC) presented the actors who will bring this presentation to life.

This will be held in a mixed way, that is, on Good Friday, which is the most important day where the viacrucis is staged, will be open to the public, while Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday will be held without an audience.

At a press conference held at the Museum of New Fire on Cerro de la Estrella, the president of the Organizing Committee, Alfonso Reyes, invited the faithful to attend virtually through the Committee's social networks and those who attended Good Friday in person did so with the measures implemented by the government to prevent COVID-19.

Axel Eduardo González Bárcenas will be the young man who will personify Jesus, and he said that he was very excited and that physical, mental and spiritual preparation began since Ash Wednesday. The Virgin Mary will be played by Uri Celeste Mosco Ramírez, who stated that: “It is a very strong feeling in every rehearsal and in every presentation, the preparation is before every rehearsal on Sundays before the Cathedral we show up to Mass and make confession”. He also clarified that it is a great honor and great pride to represent the Virgin Mary.

The Apostle Judas Iscariot will be personified by Juan Álvarez Sánchez; and the Samaritan by Jaqueline Quintana Ubaldo; Maria Magdalena by Gabriela Ana Marín Cano; Soledad will be Exayana Gómez Hernandez; Veronica by Vanessa Concepción Caro Moreno; Claudia by Laura Christina Hernández Medina and Iras by Jessica Vanessa Cruz Vidal.

The Apostle Pedro will be played by Carlos Hernandez Valle; the Apostle Juan by Victor Manuel López Medina; Pontius Pilate by Juan Carlos Galicia Felicia and Herod Antipas by Francisco Ramírez Frias.

“It's not just anything, it's a whole dynamic that they follow in a disciplined manner and that they fulfill, they are artists elected by the people to represent the different members of this great representation with dignity. All our pride is represented in you, thank you very much,” said Iztapalapa Mayor Clara Brugada Molina.

As artistic director of the scenes, Roberto Guillén stated that: “It is a people of faith, customs and traditions, this tradition is recognized, that leads to that spirit and willingness to participate in this performance. All the young people I congratulate them, they have wanted him, each one gives him his personality and that message that they can give through the dialogues of each character, hopefully it can reach the heart of each one who is watching us.” He also stated that his commitment as an Organizing Committee is to carry out the tests but also to raise awareness.

“The main objective of our tradition is the preservation of the expression of faith and identity as Iztalapenses,” said Alfonso Reyes. In addition, he explained the modification to the mixed presentation that was made for this edition in order to avoid contagion in the population.

At the end of the conference, the members of the Committee and the actors stood up to be able to take the official photograph of the cast.
