Gabriel Quadri, a deputy of the National Action Party (PAN), again made a transphobic comment against the trans legislator of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Salma Luévano, whom he called “sir” even though she identifies as a woman.
After this discriminatory act carried out from the rostrum of the Chamber of Deputies, which was legislating on trans children, various officials of both political parties condemned the statements of the former presidential candidate in 2012 by Nueva Alianza.
In the first instance, Patricia Armendáriz, on behalf of the cherry party, asked to improve the code of ethics within the premises of the lower house, since she assured that Acción Nacional has distinguished itself by insulting.
“It is urgent to improve the code of ethics in the chamber of deputies. Not only has insult become the only argument that distinguishes @AccionNacional, but now it was the height of MP @g_quadr in using the tribune to refer to our trans @SalmaLuevano pride,” he wrote.
He also acknowledged the work done by Luévano during his career as an activist “in defense of the majorities”, so he criticized the way in which the panista addressed his teammate and supported the complaint he will lodge for these discriminatory comments.
Also on Morena's side, Deputy Andrea Chávez stated that the PAN bench protected an “unpresentable anti-rights”, since it was Santiago Creel, who served as chairman of the Board of Directors at this session, who gave him the floor and allowed such expressions.
“The PAN bench protects an unpresentable anti-rights. Gabriel Quadri has attacked the dignity of our colleague, Congresswoman Salma Luévano. We will not allow these expressions of utmost baseness and ruinness to continue to occur in the village house. We demand respect,” he wrote in his tweet, which was accompanied by a fragment of the controversy in the Chamber of Deputies.
On the part of the blue and white, Senator Xochitl Gálvez, in turn, disapproved the attitude of her party partner, although she also questioned the aggression against Creel and asked that dialogue among legislators should prevail rather than violence.
“Reprehensible that deputy @g_quadri addresses as “sir” with a trans deputy. It is an aggression against the entire LGBTTTIQ+ community. Equally unacceptable is the aggression against deputy @SantiagoCreelM. Dialogue must prevail between legislators and legislators,” wrote Gálvez Ruiz.
Not all reactions were given on social media, as deputy Cynthia López Castro, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), during the session, rose from her seat and demanded a public apology from Gabriel Quadri for her transphobic comments.
He added that these words, in addition to insulting Luévano, disrespected all Mexicans and legislators who, for many years, have fought for a country without discrimination. “It is shameful that a federal deputy violates the first constitutional article of non-discrimination in this way,” he exploded.
On what happened, Gabriel Quadri, in an interview with journalist Azucena Uresti, acknowledged that he “passed his hand” with her comment, but added that he responded that way because Salma Luévano allegedly threatened him with death, as did his family.
“I have never insulted them until now, I admit that I missed my hand. I reacted excessively but apologized, if they are going to proceed legally, I will also proceed legally because they have verbally and physically assaulted me,” said the PAN legislator.
She added that the Morenista's statements were also an “excess”, so, she declared, from this moment she will refer to her as a woman and deputy in order not to cause a situation similar to that of this Thursday.
