A video of Jim Carrey kissing Alicia Silverstone at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards is going viral on the internet as a result of the actor-comedian's strong criticism of his colleague Will Smith for slapping fellow comedian Chris Rock.

In his statement about what happened at the Oscars, Carrey said that the slap had been “disgusting” and that he was disgusted to see it, but mainly because Smith was not removed from the venue after his assault on Rock, but was allowed to take the stage to accept his Best Actor award, give a speech and receive a standing ovation standing.

Carrey's reaction was one of the most vehement since the Oscar scandal, which has escalated to the point that the Academy is considering withdrawing the award for King Richard's protagonist.

But the internet does not forgive and now it was the turn of the interpreter of Liar Liar, The Mask and the Truman Show to receive criticism for his past behaviors, nothing more and nothing less than at another awards ceremony.

The images date back to 1997, when 19-year-old Alicia Silverstone announced Jim Carrey as the winner of the award for best actor in comedy for his role in “The Cable Guy” at the MTV Movie Awards. But as he approached the podium to receive his golden popcorn, the then 35-year-old comedian thought it would be funny to kiss Silverstone surprisingly and without his consent on the mouth.

Then they broke up and Alicia, now 45, awkwardly stepped aside, looking somewhat shocked. In the video she is seen somewhat uncomfortable, moving away from Carrey while thanking for the prize, but in the end she takes him by the hand and goes down with him from the stage.

In his speech, Jim recited the lyrics of the song Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood & The Destroyers on the microphone and then burped, receiving applause, batons and laughter as a reaction from the audience.

In that same show Carrey had a meeting with Smith, when the latter won the award for “Best Kiss” and on his way to receiving it Carrey pounced on him and tried to kiss him, tongue and everything.

A quick Will Smith stopped him, grabbing him by the neck in a few short seconds left for posterity as yet another of the awkward moments that go through jokes at awards ceremonies, especially in light ones such as the MTV Movie Awards.

However, in the light of recent events, criticism of the comedian was swift and the qualifications of “hypocrite” were just around the corner.

Other names such as “scum” were directed to the actor for denouncing Will's behavior when he himself had “sexually assaulted” Alicia Silverstone on stage.

“In that case, Jim Carrey should be jailed for sexually assaulting a teenage girl Alicia Silverstone on stage at the 1997 MTV Awards, and then also attempting to sexually assault Will Smith at the same awards show,” one Twitter user wrote.

At another time during those MTV Movie Awards, Jim Carrey tried to kiss Will Smith after he won the “Best Kiss” award.

Another added: “It's incredible that Jim Carrey sexually assaulted Alicia Silverstone by physically forcing her to kiss him on national television and it literally had no impact on her career. It's such a complete crap on so many levels.”

A third posted: “He forcibly kissed Alicia Silverstone and also tried to do the same with Will Smith. Regardless of age or age differences, what Jim Carrey did was an ASSAULT. It's scum and it didn't have to be imposed on people!”

Jim's strong statements against Will were made in an interview with CBS's Gayle King on Monday morning, in which he also stated that if he was Chris Rock he would have demanded $200 million because the video is something that will remain for a long time.

“That insult is going to last a long time. If you want to shout from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter, that's fine. But you don't have the right to go on stage and hit someone in the face because they said words,” Carrey reiterated.

A surprised Alicia Silverstone was left without knowing what to do after Jim Carrey kissed her on the live show.

Surely the Oscar slap will be something that will be remembered forever, and with the speed of the internet it has already become a meme. But that video of Jim kissing Alicia doesn't look like it's going anywhere either.
