In the 64 editions that have had the Grammy Awards, some Mexicans have managed to position themselves as internationally recognized artists with an award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The first time a Mexican managed to obtain one of these prestigious awards, he had it in 1985.

Although the history of the Grammys dates back to 1959, it was more than 20 years after that a Mexican person was awarded at the most important gala in music. Luis Miguel is the one who took an Academy Award to Mexico for the first time.

In the 27th edition of the Grammys El Sol was nominated for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Performance, a category that opened just a year earlier. His competition was Juan Gabriel with Memories II, Roberto Carlos with Concave and Convex, Yolanda del Rio with A Special Love and Raphael with Eternally Yours.

Micky won the award with Sheena Easton, with whom he played I like you as you are, one of the singer's many hits.

Luis Miguel was only 15 years old when he won his first Grammy, but over 40 years of artistic career he has gathered 15 nominations and six Academy Awards in his international awards. At the Latin Grammys he has been nominated 10 times and won six awards.

In 1994, 1995, 1998, the performer of La Unconditional won another Grammys for Best Latin Pop Album, being the first with Mexican nationality to position himself in this category, where Puerto Ricans usually won. Aries, Segundo Romance and Nada es igual were the albums with which he competed and won.

Three years later, in 1988, Los Tigres del Norte were the second Mexican artists to win a Grammy with their album Gracias América... without borders. The group of the Hernández Angulo brothers won the Academy Award in the same first category as Luismi.

The Tigres del Norte competed in the 30th edition with Antonio Aguilar, Chavela and Grupo Express, Little Joe and Los Diablos.

In 2001 Pepe Aguilar won his first Grammy also in the Best Mexican/Mexican-American Performance category for his album Por una mujer bonita. At the Academy Awards, Flor Silvestre's son has been nominated seven times in the same category. In 2001, 2007, 2008 and 2012 he won the prize.

Ramón Ayala in 2002 managed for the first time to win a Grammy, this after being nominated for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Performance six times and left empty-handed.

Joan Sebastian

The first Mexicans to have also been placed on the list of nominees in that category were Vicente Fernández with La Diferencia, Juan Gabriel with Todo and Los Bukis with Yo Te Necesio.

Joan Sebastian was also one of the first to be part of the Mexicans recognized at the Grammy Awards, since in 2003 his name entered the list of nominees and winners for Lo dijo el corazón as Best Mexican/Mexican-American Performance. Then, in 2004, he won the same award again and in 2007 he released Best Album of Banda Music, winning the award for the first time in this category.

Both Luis Miguel and Joan Sebastian have been two of the Mexicans with the most Grammys, because while the performer of Cuando Caliente el Sol won six awards, Joan Sebastian had seven.
