The constant rains caused by the winter wave that hit the country, have different organizations on alert to the risk of possible floods and emergencies, caused by the increasing number of water tributaries in Cali. All the authorities are on the lookout for the levels that the Cauca river may present in the coming days, as it should be noted that, it does not depend solely on the rainfall recorded in the Valle del Cauca, since the place where this river artery originates is the department of Cauca, specifically where the river artery is located. Salvajina reserve, which becomes the reservoir that nourishes it the most.
From the mayor's office of Santiago de Cali, Mayor Jorge Iván Ospina, has called for attention for communities to contribute their efforts to avoid clogging sewage channels, which is why it often becomes the trigger for floods, in turn, he indicated that all the city's capacities are are vigilant to intervene in areas of risk, and in the event of an imminent evacuation in the areas surrounding the Cauca River, and all rivers that flow from west to east in the capital of the Valley.
Although the Secretary for Disaster Risk Management of Cali, Rodrigo Zamorano, indicated that the elevation of the Cauca river channel had acceptable stability in recent hours, with a level of 10.10 meters, in the same way, he stressed that from his dependence there is continued vigilance against any anomalies or reports by citizens and the checkpoints, in addition to this, explained that, within the local administration, they seek to reduce the impact of a possible environmental emergency on the social niches that are settled in the area.
In turn, Secretary Zambrano highlighted the commitment of the Secretariat for Disaster Risk Management in the city, in the constant monitoring that is carried out hand in hand with all security components. Meanwhile, he stated that the probability of the continuation of the phenomenon of 'La Niña' is close to 90%, added to the first rainy season that hits several regions of the country. Another factor that causes concern is the stability of the Puerto Mallarino Wastewater Plant, which becomes the city's water management center, this is the main focus of the administration, since in previous weeks a possible flood risk was predicted that would leave much of the city of Santiago. of Cali, without the supply of drinking water. Similarly, the analysis of the river extends to the surrounding municipalities, such as Jamundí and Yumbo.
Regarding the Puerto Mallarino plant, in recent days there was a gradual increase in river level, averaging to 9.82 meters, this index triggered the orange alert as a preventive measure, since in just 72 hours, the Cauca river increased considerably by more than one meter. These variations with respect to the size of the tributary have caused damage to families located between the wet leg of the jarillón and the river, a sector adjacent to the dam that protects the city itself. According to the Ministry of Risk Management, families living in this area suffer precarious effects due to small overflows, this unit has invited this population to join the Cali Jarillón Plan in order to continue the process of relocation and resettlement outlined by the local administration.
In the last few hours 'the branch of heaven', has presented heavy rains that have generated several emergencies in the hillside areas. Relief agencies have given some peace of mind, however, the risk is constant.
